Vikings-Giants game moved to Monday night

Kansas City, Mo. -- A big snow storm in Minnesota caused the NFL to bump Sunday's scheduled game between the Vikings and New York Giants to Monday night.

An NFL spokesman told the New York Daily News the shift was made because the snowstorm -- one of the biggest in Twin Cities history -- left a dangerous amount of snow on the roof of Metrodome in Minneapolis, where the game will be played.

The delay also came after a crazy day of travel for the Giants, whose flight to the Twin Cities was diverted to Kansas City Saturday when the blizzard forced the closure of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The Giants were scheduled to play the Minnesota Vikings Sunday at noon CST.

Discover sued for telemarketing abuses

St. Paul, Minn. -- The state of Minnesota has filed suit against Discover Financial Services for an array of pressurized marketing practices, court papers show.

State Attorney General Lori Swanson filed the lawsuit claiming telemarketers describe sales calls as a "courtesy call" and the rush through descriptions of services they are selling, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Tuesday.

"This is a case of a credit card playing 'gotcha' instead of playing fair," Swanson said in a press conference.

The telemarketers often "speed-read" their sales pitches, slurring words or skipping key phrases, the lawsuit says.

Black, Gardenhire voted managers awards

New York -- San Diego's Bud Black and Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire have been voted the managers of the year for their respective leagues, it was announced Wednesday.

Tom Kelly, who won in 1991, is the only other Minnesota manager to win the award.

Black edged Cincinnati's Dusty Baker by one point in winning the National League manager of the year award.

The Padres finished 90-72 and in second place behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West after being a consensus pick to finish last in the division. San Diego led the division much of the season despite fielding the second-lowest paid lineup in baseball.

He joins Bruce Bochy, now the manager of the Giants, as the only Padres leader to be manager of the year. Bochy won in San Diego in 1996.

The player was called for roughing and misconduct penalties in the second period, and as he left the ice for the dressing room he grabbed a Minnesota fan by the shirt and shook him. The fan had been cheering Rypien's departure from the game.

Minnesota won the contest in St. Paul 6-2.

The Otter Tail Sheriff's Department said Sebeka Police Chief Eric Swenson reported the items missing Friday from his home. Besides the stun grenades and loaded magazines for a Glock 9 mm handgun and an AR-15 rifle, the missing arsenal included gas grenades, gas shotgun rounds, a police radio and a pair of night vision goggles, the Fergus Falls (Minn.) The department said Swenson called again Monday to report he had found the missing items. He told deputies one of his children had taken them and put them in his play fort.

Grinch steals kids' pumpkins

Inver Grove Heights, Minn. -- Like Christmas displays in stores, the Grinch came early this year, stealing pumpkins grown by a class of Minnesota third-graders, their teacher says.

Lori Gustafson, a teacher at Salem Hills Elementary School in the St. Paul suburb of Inver Grove Heights, said she had to break the bad news to her students last week that someone had stolen the pumpkins they had been nurturing and looking forward to harvesting.

"I felt kind of sad, maybe a little mad at whoever did it," 9-year-old Maya Merritt was quoted as saying in a St. Paul Pioneer Press story Wednesday.

"We were going to carve the pumpkins," 8-year-old Jacob Lindberg added.

Favre got ankle injection after game

Mineapolis -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre says he received an injection in his injured left ankle after Saturday's exhibition game.

Favre told Sports Illustrated the injection of lubricants into the ankle was "like a grease fitting," SI.com reported Monday.

The signal-caller's ankle has been operated on three times. The latest surgery came May 22 when orthopedist Dr. James Andrews removed loose bodies from the joint.

"They took out a cup full of stuff -- bone and all these other loose bodies," Favre said Saturday.

When asked if he thought he could last a whole season, he replied: "I don't know. I have no idea, really."

MLB: Cleveland 7, Minnesota 6

Cleveland -- Matt LaPorta homered while leading off the ninth inning Friday, giving the Cleveland Indians a wild 7-6 victory over Minnesota.

The Twins fell behind 4-0 after two innings and finally completed a game-long attempt to catch up when they scored twice in the top of the ninth.

Both the Minnesota runs came on a one-out single by Alexi Casilla, who had four RBI in the game after having had just eight in his previous 41 contests this season.

The 6-6 deadlock lasted only two pitches into the bottom half of the ninth before LaPorta homered to center off Matt Guerrier (2-7).
