Koivu signs long-term deal with Wild

Minneapolis -- The Minnesota Wild announced Thursday captain Mikko Koivu had signed a lucrative contract extension keeping him with the team through the 2017-18 season.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported the deal, worth $47.25 million, has a full no-trade clause. Koivu is to get $5.4 million each year with $1.89 million signing bonuses in each October in 2011, 201, 2015 and 2017, as well as January 2018, the newspaper said.

"I am pleased to announce that our captain, Mikko Koivu, has signed a seven-year contract extension," Minnesota General Manager Chuck Fletcher said. "This is an historic day for the Wild. Mikko is the flag in the ground that we will build our team around.

NHL: Minnesota 3, Dallas 2

St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild notched its third win in four games Saturday, edging the Dallas Stars 3-2.

Defenseman Marek Zidlicky had a goal and an assist for the Wild, while Cal Clutterbuck and Mikko Koivu scored goals to back the 19-save goaltending of Niklas Backstrom in the win.

The Stars, meanwhile, dropped their fourth game in five. Dallas was led by Loui Eriksson, who scored twice in the loss.

The Wild set the tone 9:46 into the game while shorthanded when Clutterbuck scored, followed seven minutes later by Koivu's goal.

Eriksson's second marker of the second period tied it for Dallas, but Zidlicky's tally put the Wild on top to stay with 1:48 to go in the period.

NHL: Minnesota 3, Colorado 2 (SO)

St Paul, Oct. 21 -- Mikko Koivu scored the tying goal with 4:51 left in regulation Wednesday and then produced the only shootout tally to give Minnesota a 3-2 win over Colorado.

Minnesota halted a five-game losing streak, winning for just the second time this season.

Darcy Tucker and Kyle Quincey delivered second-period goals that gave the Avalanche a 2-1 advantage going into the final stanza. With Wojtek Wolski serving a two-minute penalty for delay of game, Koivu put a slapshot past Craig Anderson to tie the score.

Koivu then scored in the opening round of the shootout and the Wild went on to hand Colorado its first loss in five games.

Niklas Backstrom made 33 saves in regulation and overtime before turning away all three Colorado shootout attempts.

NHL: Minnesota 4, Anaheim 3 (OT)

Minneapolis, Oct. 7: A power-play goal by Andrew Brunette in overtime gave Minnesota a 4-3 victory over Anaheim in the Wild's home opener Tuesday.

Brunette knocked in a rebound of his own shot against Jean-Sebastian Giguere at 3:08 of the extra period to keep the Wild unbeaten in eight home openers at Xcel Energy Center.

The Wild had the man advantage after James Wisniewski was sent off for roughing.
Niklas Backstrom made 16 saves for Minnesota and Giguere had 28 in his first start of the season.

Minnesota scored three times in the third period to force overtime after the Ducks notched all three of their goals in the second period.
