90 teen pregnancies at one Memphis high school

Teen pregnancy epidemic has hit a school in Memphis! Nearly 90 students at Frayser High School are pregnant or have given birth in the last year, according to the latest statistics report.

COL BKB: Memphis 70, LSU 61

Tupelo, Miss. -- Wesley Witherspoon pumped in 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds Sunday, propelling No. 19 Memphis to a 70-61 victory over Louisiana State.

Memphis (3-0) posted its third straight win to start the season thanks in part to 12 points each from Chris Crawford and Joe Jackson.

Tarik Black added nine points and hauled down nine rebounds in the Tigers' win.

LSU (2-2) was led by Andre Stringer, who notched 13 points. Aaron Dotson added 12 points and Ralston Turner chipped in with 11.

Kosher barbecue draws 42 teams

Memphis -- Organizers of the 22nd World Kosher Barbecue Championship at a Memphis synagogue said 42 groups competed in this year's event.

Debby and Ira Weinstein, board members of the Anshei Sphard-Beth El Emeth and the originators of the event, said about 2,000 people came out Sunday to enjoy the dishes prepared by the teams, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported Monday.

The Weinsteins said the barbecue raises money for the synagogue and draws kosher barbecue enthusiasts from Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas and New York.

"It's the one event in the city that brings all of the Jewish community together -- Orthodox, conservative -- it's a true community event," said Rick Baer, the congregation president.

Fans gather to mark death of Elvis

Memphis -- An estimated 15,000 fans gathered outside the gates of Graceland in Memphis to mark the 33rd anniversary of rock 'n' roll icon Elvis Presley's death.

Presley, who was said to have long abused prescription drugs, died of a heart attack at his estate on Aug. 16, 1977. He was 42.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal said his admirers carried candles to a flower-strewn grave Sunday night.

They braved temperatures that reached 118 degrees on the "heat index," an Elvis fan said.

AutoZone to release Q1 earnings on Dec. 8

Memphis, Tenn, November 21 -- AutoZone Inc. the nation's leading auto parts retailer and distributor of automotive replacement accessories, will release results of its first quarter before markets open Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.

The Company will also host a one hour conference call on the same day to discuss the results of the quarter.

The company’s previous years’ results (for the same quarter) were above average. Sales rose by 1.6 percent from $1.46 billion to $1.48 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) increased by 10.1 percent. The company also repurchased $2.2 million at an average price of $122 per share.

COL BKB: Memphis 69, Houston 60

Houston -- Tyreke Evans tossed in 23 points Wednesday and No. 3 Memphis won its 21st straight game by fighting off Houston 69-60.

The Tigers, hoping for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, are one win away from finishing their third straight unbeaten Conference USA campaign.
Memphis (27-3, 15-0 C-USA) has already wrapped up its fourth consecutive league title.

Robert Dozier added 15 points for the Tigers and Shawn Taggart had 12. Houston (18-10, 9-6) was led by 19 points and 11 rebounds from Aubrey Coleman.

Houston overcame a six-point halftime deficit, fell behind by six again and then rallied to tie the contest once more.

Memphis, however, put together a 9-0 run, during which Dozier had two layups, and Houston came no closer than five the rest of the way.

COL BKB: Memphis 58, Southern Miss 42

Memphis -- Robert Dozier had 18 points and seven rebounds Saturday, helping fourth-ranked Memphis forge a 58-42 victory over Southern Miss.

Tyreke Evans added 14 points and six rebounds for Memphis (26-3, 14-0 C-USA), which extended the nation's best winning streak to 20 games. The Tigers has already clinched the Conference USA regular season title for a fourth consecutive season.

Jeremy Wise and R.L. Horton each scored 14 points to pace Southern Miss (14-14, 4-10), which has lost eight of its last nine games. No other player reached double figures for the Golden Eagles.

COL BKB: Memphis 71, Ala.-Birmingham 60

Birmingham, Ala. -- Doneal Mack and Antonio Anderson keyed a late 15-2 run Thursday that vaulted No. 4 Memphis to a 71-60 victory over Alabama-Birmingham.

The Tigers clinched their fourth straight Conference USA regular-season championship.

Mack scored 17 points and Anderson had 16 to carry Memphis to its 19th consecutive victory -- the longest current winning streak in the nation. The Tigers have won 55 straight games against conference opponents.

Alabama-Birmingham battled Memphis on even terms through most of the game and trailed by just one point when Aaron Johnson made a layup with 4:36 to play.

The Blazers, however, could score just two points during the next four minutes. Mack hit a 3-point shot with 2:37 to go that gave the Tigers a 63-55 lead and Anderson made another long-range effort with 1:47 remaining for a 66-57 advantage.

COL BKB: Memphis 70, Texas-El Paso 63

El Paso, Texas -- Tyreke Evans had 25 points and eight rebounds Saturday, powering sixth-ranked Memphis to a 70-63 win over Texas-El Paso.

The victory extended the nation's longest winning streak to 18 games and gave the Tigers a 54-game win streak in conference play.

Antonio Anderson had 10 points and eight rebounds for Memphis (24-3, 12-0 Conference-USA), whose last loss in league play was March 2, 2006, at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Stefon Jackson scored 24 points, and Randy Culpepper and Tavaris Watts each had 13 points for the Miners (16-10, 7-5).

Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Tyreke Evans scored 19 points Saturday, keying a 72-47 win by 10th-ranked Memphis over Southern Miss.

Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier each added 12 points for the Tigers (22-3, 10-0 Conference USA).

Memphis has won 16 straight games and holds a 64-1 mark against conference foes since 2005-06. The Tigers are going for their third straight undefeated season in league play.

Southern Miss (13-11, 3-7) was paced by Jeremy Wise, who had 15 points. Courtney Beasley had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, who have lost five straight games.
