MLB: St. Louis 5, Philadelphia 1

St. Louis -- Matt Holliday hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh Wednesday and Jaime Garcia limited Philadelphia to four hits, bringing St. Louis a 5-1 win over the Phillies.

The Cardinals extended their winning streak to eight games, their longest in six seasons. They moved 1 1/2 games in front of Cincinnati for the lead in the National League Central. The Reds lost to Washington 8-5 Wednesday.

Philadelphia, playing the next-to-last contest in an eight-game road trip that followed the All-Star break, fell to 1-6 on the journey.

Garcia (9-4) gave up the lone Philadelphia run and his six strikeouts over seven innings were one shy of his season high in this, his rookie campaign.

MLB: St. Louis 6, Cincinnati 3

Cincinnati -- Matt Holliday keyed a four-run seventh with a two-run double Wednesday, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over Cincinnati.

Holliday went 2-for-5 and scored twice, helping the Cardinals down the Reds for the second time in as many games.

It was a 2-2 tie going into the seventh, which Skip Schumaker opened with a single off losing pitcher Danny Herrera. Brendan Ryan drew a walk and Albert Pujols singled in Schumaker with the go-ahead run.

Holliday followed with a double to center to make it 5-2 and Holliday scored on a two-out single by Yadier Molina.

Jason Bay hits MLB free-agent market

New York -- Boston outfielder Jason Bay was among 79 major leaguers entering free-agent status Thursday when baseball allowed them to file.

Bay, Los Angeles Angels right-handed starter John Lackey and St. Louis left fielder Matt Holliday were the marquee players filing on the first day. All three are testing the free-agent market for the first time in their careers.

Lackey has spent his entire eight-year career with the Angels, while Holliday spent time with Colorado and Oakland before joining the Cardinals, and Bay was with San Diego and Pittsburgh before going to the Red Sox.

Bay, 31, the 2004 National League Rookie of the Year and .280 career hitter, hit .267 with career-highs in homers (36) and RBI (119) last season.

MLB: St. Louis 3, Chi. Cubs 2

St. Louis, Sept. 19: Matt Holliday opened the ninth inning with a home run off Aaron Heilman Friday, giving St. Louis a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

St. Louis increased its lead over Chicago to 10 games in the National League Central. Any combination of six St. Louis wins or Chicago losses during the final two weeks of the season will make the Cardinals division champion.

The Cardinals have a 34-16 record since July 24, when they obtained Holliday in a trade with Oakland.

The Cardinals defeated the Cubs for the eighth time in 11 games.

St. Louis starter John Smoltz allowed six hits and two runs over six innings. The win went to Ryan Franklin (3-3), who worked the top of the ninth.

MLB: St. Louis 4, Milwaukee 3

Milwaukee, Sept. 9: Matt Holliday crushed a Trevor Hoffman fastball in the ninth Tuesday for a two-run homer that rallied the St. Louis to a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hoffman (1-2) came on in the bottom of the ninth to hold a 3-2 lead but he walked Albert Pujols with one out and then served up a low fastball that Holliday drilled over the fence in straightaway center field at Miller Park.

Pujols hit his 45th homer of the season for the Cardinals, who have won nine of their last 11 games.

Blake Hawksworth (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief of John Smoltz, who game up three runs on six hits and struck out seven in five innings. Kyle McClellan earned the save, his third.

MLB: St. Louis 7, Milwaukee 6

St. Louis, Sept. 2: Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday homered for the St. Cardinals Tuesday in their 7-6 win over Milwaukee.

Holliday's three-run blast in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner for the surging Cards, who have won eight of their last nine games and 15 of their last 18.

Holliday nailed a fast ball from Todd Coffey, who had come on to relieve David Weathers (3-5) with the score tied 4-4, after Weathers gave up a double to Skip Schumaker and then intentionally walked Pujols.

Joel Pineiro (14-9) won his eighth consecutive decision by holding the Brewers to four runs on seven hits in seven innings.

MLB: St. Louis 5, San Diego 1

San Diego, Aug. 21: A grand slam homer by Brendan Ryan and a four-hit performance by Joel Pineiro Thursday lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over San Diego.

The Cardinals are 3-1 on a seven-game western road trip and have reached 70 victories for the season.

Ryan's homer -- his second long ball of the season in 272 at bats -- came in the second inning. Pineiro (12-9) took over from there, carrying a two-hitter into the eighth inning.

Pineiro eventually loaded the bases with two away in the eighth and was replaced by Kyle McClellan, who got David Eckstein on a grounder to shortstop to end the threat.

MLB: St. Louis 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 2

Los Angeles, Aug. 20: Albert Pujols helped manufacture the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Wednesday and St. Louis held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

The Cardinals need one more victory to become the fourth team in the majors to reach the 70-win mark -- joining the Dodgers, the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees.

St. Louis held a 2-0 lead into the seventh before the Dodgers tied it on solo homers by Andre Ethier and Casey Blake.

It was still 2-2 heading into the ninth, but Pujols drew a leadoff walk on a 3-2 pitch off Jonathan Broxton (7-1), who suffered his first setback of the season.

MLB: St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 2

St. Louis, Aug. 13: Albert Pujols boosted his home run total to a major-league leading 38 with his second in as many games Wednesday, helping boost St. Louis past Cincinnati 5-2.

The Cardinals won for the fifth time in six outings and increased their lead over the Chicago Cubs to four games in the National League Central.

St. Louis capitalized on a throwing error by starting pitcher Homer Bailey to score three times in the first. The error came after Bailey had scrambled to pick up a Pujols line drive that hit Bailey in the foot.

Bailey (2-4) left the game without having retired a batter.

Pujols hit his home run in the third to give St. Louis a 4-1 lead. Matt Holliday contributed three of the 10 St. Louis hits.

MLB: St. Louis 4, Cincinnati 1

St. Louis, Aug. 11: Matt Holliday had a triple, an RBI and a run scored Monday for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 for their fourth straight win.

Holliday is hitting .459 with four homers and 16 RBI in 16 games with the Cardinals since being acquired from Oakland.

Brendan Ryan, Khalil Greene and Colby Rasmus each had an RBI for St. Louis.

Kyle Lohse (5-7) earned the win after pitching six innings and giving up one run on four hits to end a four-decision losing streak. It was Lohse's first victory since May 23.

Brandon Phillips drove in the lone run for the Reds.

Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto lasted just two innings after suffering a tight left hip flexor while running out a grounder.

MLB: St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 4

Pittsburgh, Aug. 8: Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer Friday as St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 6-4.

The homer gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first.

Mark DeRosa, like Holliday, a trade-deadline acquisition, had three hits, including a solo homer.

Ryan Ludwick, Khalil Greene and Skip Schumaker each had one RBI, while Albert Pujols added three hits for the Cardinals, who have split their last four games.

Winner Chris Carpenter (11-3) surrendered four runs and nine hits in eight innings.

Closer Ryan Franklin earned his 25th save.

Pittsburgh's Garrett Jones and Ryan Duomit hit solo homers.

Delwyn Young had two hits and one RBI.

MLB: St. Louis 4, Houston 3

St. Louis, July 31: Matt Holliday doubled home the tying run in the eighth and then scored on a single by Rick Ankiel Friday, boosting St. Louis to a 4-3 victory over Houston

The Cardinals jumped a half game in front of the Chicago Cubs for the lead in the National League Central.

St. Louis had already come from one run behind twice in the game before doing it again in the eighth.

With one out, Alberto Arias (2-1) hit Albert Pujols with a pitch and Pujols promptly scored on Holliday's double -- the last of his four hits. Since being obtained by the Cardinals from Oakland last week, Holliday is batting .586.

Holliday moved to third on a wild pitch and put the Cardinals in front when Ankiel singled to left.
