Teixeira is AL Player of Week

New York -- New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was named the American League's Player of the Week Monday after hitting .476 in the past week.

Teixeira got on base safely in all seven New York games in the week ending Sunday and had a .633 on-base percentage during that span as the Yankees went 6-1. He also drove in eight runs while producing a .905 slugging percentage.

It is the fifth career weekly award for Teixeira, who has 30 home runs, the seventh straight season he's reached the mark.

Others considered for the award included Teixeira teammate Curtis Granderson, Seattle's Felix Hernandez and David Aardsma, Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill and Angels starter Ervin Santana.

MLB: New York Yankees 4, Oakland 3

New York -- Mark Teixeira drove in three runs Wednesday and the New York Yankees took advantage of a key second-inning error to edge Oakland 4-3.

New York won its fifth in a row and stayed a game in front of second-place Tampa Bay in the American League East. The Rays defeated Toronto Wednesday.

Teixeira doubled home Derek Jeter in the first and finished off a three-run second with a two-run single.

The second inning was kept alive, however, when pitcher Brett Anderson booted a grounder back to the mound by Jeter. That miscue made all three runs in the frame unearned.

A.J. Burnett (10-12) gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in six innings to get the win. He had gone 0-4 in his previous five starts.

MLB: New York Yankees 11, Toronto 5

Toronto -- Mark Teixeira, Marcus Thames and Jorge Posada all blasted third-inning homers Tuesday and the New York Yankees pounded Toronto 11-5.

The three long balls were part of a five-home run barrage by the Yankees. Curtis Granderson homered among his three hits and Derek Jeter also went deep as New York evened its three-game series with the Blue Jays at a win apiece.

Teixeira and Posada each ended the night 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Thames chipped in with three hits and a pair of RBI as the Yankees lashed 17 hits.

New York entered the game tied with Tampa Bay atop the American League East standings.

Dustin Moseley (4-2) collected the win, limiting the Blue Jays to two runs on five hits over six innings.

MLB: N.Y. Yankees 10, LA Angels 6

New York -- Mark Teixeira drove in three runs and Colin Curtis hit a pinch-hit homer Wednesday in the New York Yankees' 10-6 slugfest win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Teixeira went 3-for-5, including a two-run single in the third inning to put the Yankees up 3-0, and Curtis contributed a three-run shot in the seventh -- his first major league round-tripper -- to cap New York's 15-hit attack.

Robinson Cano and Juan Miranda added homers and Derek Jeter went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, helping the Yankees split a brief two-game series with the Angels and maintain their 2 1/2-game lead in the American League East.

Javier Vazquez (8-7) got the win despite surrendering five runs on nine hits over five innings.

MLB: New York Yankees 8, Seattle 2

Seattle -- Mark Teixeira collected four hits and CC Sabathia pitched seven effective innings Sunday in the New York Yankees' 8-2 victory over Seattle.

Sabathia (12-3) nailed down a win in his eighth straight start -- a career best -- and limited the Mariners to one run on six hits, issuing only one walk. The veteran lefty has yielded one earned run or less in each of his last five starts.

Marcus Thames bashed a two-run homer for the Yankees, who won three of four games in their set against the Mariners.

New York goes into the All-Star break with a 56-32 record and a two-game lead in the American League East.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-9) absorbed the loss for Seattle, surrendering four earned on six hits and a walk in four innings.

MLB: New York Yankees 6, Oakland 2

Oakland, Calif. -- Mark Teixeira socked a three-run homer to back a strong start by A.J. Burnett Wednesday in the New York Yankees' 6-2 victory over Oakland.

Teixeira's blast capped a five-run fourth inning that broke the game open for the Yankees.

Ramiro Pena and Derek Jeter added RBI singles in the rally, which lifted New York to a three-game series sweep of Oakland.

Burnett (7-7) collected his first win since May 30, posting his second consecutive strong outing following five straight poor starts. He held the A's to two runs on five hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out three.

A's starter Gio Gonzalez (7-6) lasted only four innings, yielding five runs on eight hits while issuing five walks.

MLB: New York Yankees 7, Cleveland 3

New York -- Mark Teixeira smashed a seventh-inning home run Sunday, rallying the New York Yankees to a 7-3 win over Cleveland.

Trailing 3-0 entering the frame, the Yankees put runners on second and third with two outs against Indians starter Justin Masterson and Jeter lashed singled to center, pulling New York to within 3-2.

Tony Sipp (0-1) came in to relieve and surrendered a double to Curtis Granderson, sending Jeter to third. Teixeira followed by socking a deep shot to left field, lifting the Yankees to a win the rubber match of a three-game weekend series.

Jeter ended 2-for-5 and Juan Miranda collected a pair of hits and knocked in a run in the comeback victory.

Yankees are world champions for 27th time

New York -- A stunning six-RBI explosion by Hideki Matsui Wednesday carried New York to a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and the Yankees' 27th World Series title.

The Yankees' designated hitter clubbed a two-run homer into the right field seats in the second inning, a two-run single to center in the third and a two-run double in the fifth.

Matsui's six RBI tied a World Series record set nearly a half-century ago by Bobby Richardson of the Yankees.

Mark Teixeira singled in the other Yankees run. Andy Pettitte was the winning pitcher and Mariano Rivera picked up another save.

Ryan Howard slugged a two-run home run and Jimmy Rollins sent home a run with a sacrifice fly for the Phillies, who were trying to repeat as World Series champions.

MLB: New York Yankees 7, Philadelphia 4

Philadelphia -- Alex Rodriguez drove in the winning run in the ninth-inning of a 7-4 New York win over Philadelphia Sunday that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

The Yankees can wrap up their 27th title Monday with a win over the Phillies in Game 5 at Philadelphia.

New York led 4-3 after 7 1/2 innings but the Phillies' Pedro Feliz tied the score 4-4 with a solo home run. However, the Yankees scored three runs with two out in the top of the ninth to take a commanding lead over the NL Champion Phillies.

MLB: LA Angels 5, N.Y. Yankees 4

Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A game-winning double by Jeff Mathis in the 11th inning Monday gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees and new hope in the ALCS.

Los Angeles fought back from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead, saw the Yankees tie it in the eighth and then failed to take advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the 10th.

The Angels finally prevailed in the 11th, getting a two-out single by Howie Kendrick off Alfredo Aceves and a double by Mathis that bounced off the left-field wall as Mathis dashed around the bases with the winning run.

MLB: N.Y. Yankees 4, Minnesota 3 (11 inn.)

New York, Oct. 9 -- Mark Teixeira lined a home run to left leading off the 11th inning Friday, lifting the New York Yankees to a controversial 4-3 playoff win over Minnesota.

New York took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five American League Division Series and will attempt to complete a sweep in Minneapolis Sunday.
Teixeira's rocket-like shot that barely cleared the 318-foot mark just inside the foul pole ended a hard-luck night for the Twins, who let a two-run lead get away in the bottom of the ninth and lost a run in the 11th because of a missed call by umpire Phil Cuzzi.

Minnesota took a 3-1 lead in the ninth, but closer Joe Nathan allowed a lead-off single to Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez followed with a home run to right that tied the game.

MLB: New York Yankees 4, Kansas City 3

New York, Sept. 29: Juan Miranda singled off the glove of Kyle Farnsworth in the ninth Tuesday to drive in the winning run in the New York Yankees' 4-3 win over Kansas City.

Farnsworth (1-5), a former Yankee, gave up a one-out infield hit to Francisco Cervelli that also deflected off the pitcher, and Eric Hinske's pinch-hit single through the right side left runners on first and third. Robinson Cano's deep fly to center scored the tying run and after a walk, Hinske scored on Miranda's hit.

It was the 28th time the Yankees won this season in their last at-bat.

Mark Teixeira hit his 39th homer to tie the game in the sixth and Nick Swisher hit his 28th of the season an inning later.
