Loretta retires, takes front-office job

San Diego-- Longtime big-league infielder Mark Loretta retired as a player Monday and took a front-office job with the San Diego Padres.

The 38-year-old Loretta played for the Padres from 2003 through 2005 in a 15-year career that also included stints with the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He played for the Dodgers last season.

Loretta joins the Padres as special assistant for baseball operations.

"I feel extremely fortunate and thankful to have had this career," Loretta said.

"The competition and camaraderie will be missed, but the experiences I enjoyed and the friendships I made will last a lifetime."

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 3, St. Louis 2

Los Angeles, Oct. 8 -- Mark Loretta's bases-loaded ninth-inning single to center capped a bizarre rally Thursday and gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2 playoff victory over St. Louis.

The Dodgers took advantage of a huge mistake by St. Louis left fielder Matt Holliday to score twice in the ninth and grab a 2-0 advantage in their National League Division Series. Los Angeles will attempt to finish a sweep when action resumes in St. Louis Saturday.

The Cardinals appeared ready to even the series when they took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.

MLB: LA Dodgers 4, San Francisco 2

San Francisco, Aug. 11: Matt Kemp's fourth-inning three-run double and a strong performance by Hiroki Kuroda helped the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Francisco 4-2.

Kuroda (5-5) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts to get the win.

Mark Loretta had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers, who won for the first time in four games.

Travis Ishikawa and Bengie Molina accounted for the Giants' scoring with solo home runs.

Jonathan Sanchez (5-10) allowed four runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts to take the loss for San Francisco, which has lost two straight and trails LA by 6 1/2 games in the NL West.

Colorado, which beat the Chicago Cubs 11-5 Monday, is in second place, 5 1/2 games out.

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 9, Atlanta 1

Atlanta, Aug. 2: Matt Kemp hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs Sunday to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-1 rout of Atlanta.

Kemp finished with three hits, including his 14th homer of the season. James Loney had three hits and two RBI for the Dodgers, who took two out of three games in Atlanta and finished their road trip 3-4.

Andre Ethier had three hits and scored a run, and Russell Martin and Mark Loretta each had two hits and a run scored for LA. Pitcher Jason Schmidt had a pinch-hit single and scored a run for the Dodgers, who have the best record in baseball at 65-40.

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Houston 2

Los Angeles, July 19: Clayton Kershaw went seven strong innings and earned his fifth straight victory Saturday, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 win over Houston.

Kershaw (8-5) allowed no runs on just two hits with five strikeouts and one walk for the Dodgers, who can salvage a split of the four-game series with a win Sunday.

Jonathan Broxton got his 21st save with a scoreless ninth in relief.

Orlando Hudson had three hits, including a triple, with one RBI and two runs scored for the Dodgers, who got a pair of RBI from Matt Kemp and one RBI from Mark Loretta.
