Bartoli breezes to win at Quebec City

Qubec City -- Top-seeded Marion Bartoli advanced to the second round of the Challenge Bell tennis tournament Tuesday by knocking off Stephanie Foretz 6-1, 6-1.

Bartoli beat her fellow Frenchwoman in 58 minutes on the strength of four aces and won 84 percent of her first-serve points.

Second seed Jill Craybas of the United States outlasted Aravane Rezai of France 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) in a tight 2 hour, 8 minute match.

Third seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic advanced Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-3 win over American Varvara Lepchenko. The unseeded Lepchenko made it interesting by winning 14 of 17 service break points and serving five aces.

Bartoli advances in Stanford title defense

Palo Alto, Calif. -- France's Marion Bartoli got off to another good start in Palo Alto Tuesday, topping Ashley Harkleroad in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic.

The fourth-seeded Bartoli cruised past her American opponent 6-1, 6-4 on the Stanford University hard court and advanced to the second round of the tournament she won last year in a stunner over Venus Williams . Bartoli finished second in the tournament in 2008.

Bartoli won the first set easily and rallied to win the second after being down a break early in the set.

Bartoli on short end of Warsaw upset

Warsaw, Poland -- Fourth-seeded Marion Bartoli of France lost for the fifth time in six matches Tuesday, falling in an upset to Czech Klara Zakopalova at the Warsaw Open.

Bartoli, a former Wimbledon runner-up, struggled again, losing to Zakopalova 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round on the red clay courts of Warszawianka Tennis Centre.

No. 3 seed Li Na of China, meanwhile, emerged with a triumph in her first-round match against Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.

Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Chinese Zheng Jie hung on to defeat Belarus' Olga Govortsova 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 and Magdalena Rybarikova bounced eighth-seeded American Melanie Oudin 6-0, 6-2.

Bartoli, Rezai set for Bali finals

Bali -- French players Marion Bartoli and Aravane Rezai each had straight-set wins Saturday and advanced to the finals of the Tournament of Champions in Indonesia.

Both players are 3-0 on the week, meaning the winner of Sunday's match will take home $200,000.

Bartoli has won both previous WTA meetings with Rezai.

Bartoli, the tournament's No. 1 seed, hasn't dropped a set this week and dominated her semifinal Saturday against Kimiko Date Krumm, winning 6-1, 6-3. She recorded six breaks over eight Date Krumm service games.

Bartoli's own serve was broken twice but she lost only 10 points on serve outside of those games.

She won eight consecutive games at one point.

Bartoli among Bali semifinalists

Bali -- Top-seeded Marion Bartoli used a straight-set win Friday to earn a spot in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions in Indonesia.

Bartoli defeated seventh-seeded Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-2 while dropping just 14 points over eight service games in winning her group's round-robin play. She won 60 percent of the points in the match, including more than half of those when Peer was serving.

Bartoli will face 12th-seeded Kimiko Date Krumm in Saturday's semifinals. Date Krumm advanced when third-seeded Yanina Wickmayer withdrew due to an alleged doping violation. Wickmayer, who denied any wrongdoing and said she would appeal the finding, failed to keep Belgium anti-doping officials updated on her whereabouts.

Bartoli wins in second-round rout in Japan

Osaka -- Marion Bartoli used a straight-set rout Wednesday to earn a quarterfinals berth at the $220,000 HP Japan Women's Open tennis tournament.

Bartoli, the tournament's No. 2 seed, blasted hometown favorite Kurumi Nara 6-1, 6-1 in a second-round match that took 61 minutes. Bartoli broke Nara's serve five times in seven tries and didn't face a break point of her own serve.

She next goes against Sania Mirza, who was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Viktoriya Kutuzova in her match Wednesday. Mirza had six double faults and four dropped service games but still managed to win.

Another quarterfinal pairing was set as fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone and No. 7-seeded Melinda Czink advanced out of the second round and will meet Friday.

Williams sisters move on at U.S. Open

New York, Sept. 2: Second-seeded Serena Williams and No. 3 Venus Williams pulled off victories in straight sets Wednesday to reach the third round of the U.S. Open.

Serena Williams needed just 53 minutes to dispose of Melinda Czink in an evening match. Czink was appearing in her 17th major tournament and this was just the seventh time she had reached the second round.

Despite being troubled by a sore knee, Venus Williams cruised by Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-2.

Former Open champion Kim Clijsters, unseeded for this event, advanced with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 14 seed Marion Bartoli. Clijsters returned to the tennis tour last month after a two-year retirement. Her only major crown came at the U.S. Open in 2005.

Clijsters returns to competitive tennis

Mason, Ohio Aug. 10: Kim Clijsters returned to competitive tennis Monday with a win in the $2 million Western and Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

Clijsters, 26, posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over France's Marion Bartoli in the first round. It was the first WTA Tour match for Clijsters, a former world No.1 player, since the spring of 2007.

She gave birth to a daughter since she retired to start a family and become injury-free.

Clijsters, who earned her lone major title at the 2005 U.S. Open, owns 34 singles titles and was ranked No. 1 for a total of 19 weeks in her prime.

Bartoli outduels Venus in Stanford final

Stanford, Calif. -- Marion Bartoli of France outlasted American Venus Williams in a 2-hour, 43-minute, three-set battle Sunday and won the Bank of the West Classic in California.

Bartoli, the No. 8 seed, ended up a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victor over the second-seeded Williams, who won the tournament in 2000 and 2002.

It was only the second time the two have played one another on the WTA Tour.

Williams won the previous encounter.

The winner's check for Bartoli totaled $107,000.

Stosur stuns Serena in Stanford

Standford, Calif. Aug. 1: Samantha Stosur stunned top-seeded Serena Williams in three sets at the Bank of the West Championship Friday.

The result prevented a potential title match-up between Williams and her sister, Venus.

Venus Williams, the second seed, won as expected later in the evening with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Maria Sharapova.

Stosur pulled off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 upset that moved her into the semifinals for a meeting with Marion Bartoli.

Bartoli also pulled off a surprise by defeating fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Venus Williams will meet Elena Dementieva after beating Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-4.

Williams sisters both win at Stanford

Standford, Calif. July 30: Serena and Venus Williams both won in straight sets Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif.

Serena Williams, seeded No. 1, ousted Melinda Czink 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) to set up a quarterfinal match against Samantha Stosur.

Venus Williams, the second seed, was a 6-1, 7-5 victor over Alla Kudryavtseva.

Marina Sharapova will face Venus Williams in the quarterfinal round.

In other second-round matches Thursday, Agnieszka Radwanska outlasted Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 and Marion Bartoli got past Melanie Oudin 7-5, 6-4.

France's Bartoli takes Monterrey title

Monterrey, Mexico -- Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France claimed her fourth WTA title Sunday, defeating Li Na in the final match of the Monterrey Open in Mexico.

Bartoli cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Li at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club.

The Frenchwoman, who was seeded No. 2 in the event, is 4-5 in WTA final matches. The Monterrey victory was her first tour title since 2006.
