Soriano replaces Rivera on AL all-stars

Tampa, Fla. -- Tampa Bay's Rafael Soriano is an American League all-star after being picked to take injured New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera's place.

It's the first all-star selection for the 30-year-old Dominican right-hander. Soriano (2-0) has 23 saves in 24 chances with a 1.65 earned run average and has held opposing batters to a .172 average.

Rivera, an 11-time all-star, is sitting out Tuesday's 81st all-star game in Anaheim because of injuries to his left side and right knee.

Yankees are world champions for 27th time

New York -- A stunning six-RBI explosion by Hideki Matsui Wednesday carried New York to a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and the Yankees' 27th World Series title.

The Yankees' designated hitter clubbed a two-run homer into the right field seats in the second inning, a two-run single to center in the third and a two-run double in the fifth.

Matsui's six RBI tied a World Series record set nearly a half-century ago by Bobby Richardson of the Yankees.

Mark Teixeira singled in the other Yankees run. Andy Pettitte was the winning pitcher and Mariano Rivera picked up another save.

Ryan Howard slugged a two-run home run and Jimmy Rollins sent home a run with a sacrifice fly for the Phillies, who were trying to repeat as World Series champions.

MLB: N.Y. Yankees 4, Boston 2

New York, Sept. 27: Solid pitching by Andy Pettitte Sunday led the New York Yankees to a 4-2 win over Boston and their first American League East title since 2006.

The win also finished a three-game sweep.

Pettitte (14-7) gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Closer Mariano Rivera earned his 44th save with a scoreless ninth.

Hideki Matsui's two-run single snapped a 2-2 tie with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Melky Cabrera and Mark Teixeira hit solo homers, with both players getting two hits along with Derek Jeter for the Yankees, who have won five in a row.

Boston scored on Mike Lowell's first-inning infield single and his double play ground out in the third.

MLB: Seattle 3, NY Yankees 2

Seattle, Sept. 19: Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning Friday, giving Seattle a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees.

New York took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning and Mariano Rivera came on in a bid to pick up his 41st save.

Rivera (3-3) seemed to have the game wrapped up when he struck out Jack Hannahan and Mike Carp to open the ninth.

In the span of just two pitches, however, Seattle came from behind. Mike Sweeney hit Rivera's first offering to center for a double and Suzuki then smashed the first pitch over the wall in right.

MLB: New York Yankees 3, Oakland 2

Oakland, Calif. Aug. 20: Mariano Rivera needed just seven pitches to record his 36th save Wednesday and preserve a 3-2 win for the New York Yankees over Oakland.

Chad Gaudin made his first start with the Yankees after being acquired from San Diego Aug. 6, but he did not figure in the decision.

New York had a 3-2 lead going into the fifth, but Gaudin loaded the bases with one out in that inning and was removed in favor of Alfredo Aceves.

Aceves (8-1) got Kurt Suzuki to ground into a double play to end the inning and eventually worked 2 1/3 innings to get the win.

MLB: N.Y. Yankees 6, Baltimore 4

New York, July 21: Sergio Mitre won in his first start since 2007 and Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer Tuesday to carry the New York Yankees to a 6-4 win over Baltimore.

Mitre (1-0), who missed the entire 2008 campaign after having elbow surgery, gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Mariano Rivera retired the side in order in the ninth for his 27th save of the year.

Alex Rodriguez had two RBI and a run for the Yankees, who have won five in a row.

Nick Swisher scored and drove in a run, and Johnny Damon also had an RBI for the Yankees.

Melvin Mora had two RBI for Baltimore, which has lost four of its last five games.

MLB: New York Yankees 5, Detroit 3

New York, July 18: A three-run homer by Mark Teixeira in the seventh Friday put New York in front and the Yankees ended a three-game losing streak by downing Detroit 5-3.

Teixeira went 3-for-5 and helped keep the Yankees three games behind Boston in the chase for the top spot in the American League East.

Curtis Granderson gave Detroit a 3-1 lead in the fifth with a solo homer, but the Yankees closed to within one in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an unearned run. Detroit left fielder Josh Anderson misplayed a single by Teixeira, allowing Johnny Damon to score.

MLB: American 4, National 3

St. Louis, July 15: Mariano Rivera set an All-Star saves record with his fourth Tuesday and the American League once again beat the National League, this time 4-3.

Rivera broke a tie for most All-Star saves with Dennis Eckersley.

Adam Jones drove in the winning run in the eighth inning after Curtis Granderson tripled off the base of the left-field fence.

The American League is now 12-0-1 in the last 13 All-Star games and will have home field in the World Series. The American League's unbeaten streak is the longest in the game's history.

Jonathan Papelbon (1-0) got the win thanks to Carl Crawford's homer-saving catch in left. Crawford's catch earned him the All-Star Game MVP Award.

MLB: New York Yankees 4, New York Mets 2

New York, June 29: Mariano Rivera became the second reliever in baseball to earn 500 career saves Sunday in the New York Yankees' 4-2 Subway Series win over the New York Mets.

After Rivera came in with two runners on in the eighth and struck out Omir Santos, he held the Mets to one hit in the ninth for his 18th save of the season.

Only the Milwaukee Brewers' Trevor Hoffman has more career saves, with 571.

The Yankees, who won their fifth straight, got all the runs they needed in the first inning. Mark Teixeira drove in Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher with a one-out double and Jorge Posada drove in Teixeira with a sacrifice fly.

Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, who entered the game 0-5, got his first victory.
