MLB: New York Yankees 6, Texas 5

Arlington, Texas -- Marcus Thames had a tiebreaking, RBI single during a five-run eighth Friday that rallied the New York Yankees to a 6-5 win over Texas in their ALCS opener.

C.J. Wilson held the Yankees to a run on six hits over seven innings and Texas appeared set to record the first home playoff victory in franchise history.

Darren Oliver, however, failed to retire any of the four batters he faced to start the eighth inning and that set the stage for a New York comeback that allowed the Yankees to seize home-field advantage in the best-of-seven series.

The teams will meet again Saturday before the series moves to New York Monday.

MLB: Detroit 6, St. Louis 3

St. Louis, June 18: Placido Polanco and Marcus Thames hit eighth-inning homers Thursday and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of a key St. Louis miscue to down the Cardinals 6-3.

The AL Central Division-leading Tigers ended a four-game losing streak and won in St. Louis for the first time in eight years. Detroit had dropped six in a row on the Cardinals' home field, including three setbacks during the 2006 World Series.

Detroit scored four times in the first, with three of the runs unearned. St. Louis cut its deficit to one through five innings, but Polanco and Thames gave the Tigers some insurance in the eighth with their homers off Jason Motte.
