Las Vegas -- Moving to a four-day work week could save the city of Las Vegas up to $24 million in two and a half years, if a union approves the move, city officials said.
A statement issued by the city also said with longer hours Monday through Thursday Las Vegas government would "work as much as possible to not adversely impact citizens needing to city business on Fridays," The Las Vegas Sun reported Thursday.
Val Sharp, vice president of the 1,400 member City Employees Association, said the CEA was recommending its members approve the contract, although concessions were part of the package.
"Based on our discussions with the city, we are encouraging them to support the proposal," which will be tested with a membership vote on Oct. 19.

Milwaukee -- Ken Macha won't return in 2011 as manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, who on Monday refused to exercise the option year on his contract.
Macha had been the team's manager for two seasons, building a 157-167 record.
Milwaukee was 77-85 in 2010 and finished third in the National League Central.
Macha is 368-280 in his managerial career, which includes four seasons at Oakland.
"I tried to do what's right," Macha told mlb.com Monday. "I think if you're sitting there worrying about, 'What's this guy going to think?' it's not going to work. You come to the ballpark, study what you've got there, put out the best lineup and do what you think is the right thing. If you win enough games, then you're going to be there."

Louisville, Ky. -- A Kentucky store manager said the return of Elvis Presley impersonators after a yearlong lull may be a good sign for the economy.
Rob Baker, manager of the Doo Wop Shop in Louisville, said Elvis impersonators were absent from the store for about a year until last week, when one came in to buy a wireless microphone and another stopped in later to rent portable show lights, The (Louisville) Courier-Journal reported Monday.
"Elvis is a dipstick, of sorts, for our economy," Baker said. "The party business is coming back. People are not thinking twice about having an event. They are feeling a bit more relaxed."

Seattle -- Seattle infielder Chone Figgins and manager Don Wakamatsu fought in the dugout during Friday's 2-1 Mariners loss to the Boston Red Sox.
Wakamatsu benched Figgins for failing to hustle after an errant throw from left fielder Michael Saunders -- a miscue that allowed Boston's Mike Cameron to make it to third on what should have been a lead-off double.
After the inning an altercation erupted in the Seattle dugout between Figgins and Wakamatsu that also involved infielder Jose Lopez and Mariners hitting coach Alonzo Powell. When Figgins' turn to bat came later in the game, Josh Wilson took his spot in the lineup.

The recession is a time of mounting unemployment, mourning workers, costly training and low profits—a time when employee retention is of critical importance.
