Ochoa removed from women's golf rankings

Daytona Beach-- Former top-ranked women's golfer Lorena Ochoa was removed from the world rankings Monday, boosting nearly every other Top 10 golfer.

Ochoa announced last month she is retiring as a touring professional and asked that she be removed from the rankings. She slipped to No. 2 last week -- after 158 weeks at No. 1 -- behind Jiyai Shin.

This week's ranking reflect the first placements without Ochoa in the mix and as a result eight Top 10 golfers saw their positions improve. Shin remained No. 1 and Michelle Wie, at No. 8, were the only exceptions. Most of the changes were one spot, with Karrie Webb's move from ninth to seventh the lone exception there.

World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa to retire

Daytona Beach -- Lorena Ochoa, the world No. 1-ranked women's golfer, plans to announce her retirement Friday from competitive golf, the LPGA said.

The LPGA, in a short announcement Tuesday on its Web site, said it has confirmed with Ochoa's management company the 28-year-old golfer would say at a scheduled news conference Friday she is stepping away from the sport.

The association said Ochoa would give her reasons and timing for the move at a news conference in Mexico City. She is scheduled to be in the field for the LPGA's Tres Marias Championship in Morelia, Mexico, next week.

Ochoa, three others lead at Singapore LPGA

Singapore -- World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa, despite a pair of bogeys Thursday, is tied for the lead after one round of the HSBC Women's Champions LPGA tournament in Singapore.

Ochoa, Cristie Kerr, Park Hee-young and Angela Stanford each shot 4-under-par 68 on the Garden Course at Singapore's Merah Country Club.

They have a 1-shot lead over Sophie Gustafson, Christina Kim, Kim Song-hee and Ai Miyazato, who won the tour's season-opening event last week. Another six golfers shot 2-under 70 in the first round.

Ochoa had an early birdie at the second hole and three birdies over the four-hole span of Nos. 8-11 before she dropped strokes at Nos. 12 and 14. Birdies at 16 and 17 got her back to 4-under.

Ochoa finishes year No. 1 in women's golf

Daytona Beach -- Lorena Ochoa's runner-up finish at the LPGA Tour Championship locked up player of the year and the 2009 No. 1 ranking.

Ochoa was battling Jiyai Shin, who had already sealed LPGA rookie of the year honors, for low scoring average and player of the year going into the 2009 schedule's final event.

Ochoa finished two strokes behind Anna Nordqvist, another tour rookie, while Shin tied for eighth in the rain-shortened Tour Championship, which wrapped up Monday. That result allowed Ochoa to claim her fourth consecutive player of the year award.

Ochoa leads LPGA Tour Championship

Houston -- Lorena Ochoa, trying to rally and win her fourth Player of the Year title, grabbed the lead Thursday after one round of the LPGA Tour Championship at Houston.

Ochoa birdied three of her last four holes to shoot a 6-under 66 at the Houstonian Golf & Country Club.

The event suffered a significant loss, however, with the withdrawal of Michelle Wie -- who won her first tour event last week in Mexico. Wie released a statement saying she had hoped to play through the pain caused by a recurring ankle injury.

"I realized today that I wouldn't be able to continue to play," she said. "I want to make sure that I'm being smart with it, so I will return home to have it looked at by my doctors and follow their advice."

Ochoa, Gustafson share LPGA lead

Danville -- Women's world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa shot a 7-under 65 Saturday to tie Sophie Gustafson for the third-round lead of the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge.

Angela Stanford and Sun Young Yoo both had 69s Saturday and share third place at 206.

Gustafson looked as though she was going to run away with the title on the front nine. She made four birdies in a five-hole span and built her lead to four strokes with a birdie on the 10th. But Ochoa played the final seven holes in 5-under to close the gap.

Shin shares lead at Samsung

Lajolla, Calif., Sept. 18: Jiyai Shin, who last week won her third tournament of the year on the LPGA Tour, shared the first-round lead Thursday at the Samsung World Championship.

Report: Bivens out as LPGA commissioner

Bethlehem, Pa. July 9: Golfweek magazine reported Thursday that the LPGA Tour has decided not to retain Commissioner Carolyn Bivens for the final two years of her contract.

Bivens has been involved in a series of controversies during her four years on the job and recently came under attack from a group of high-profile players.

A group that included Lorena Ochoa, Michelle Wie, Juli Inkster and Paula Creamer sent a letter to the LPGA board of directors asking that Bivens be dismissed, published reports indicated.

Only 10 tournaments have been officially lined up for the 2010 LPGA Tour schedule.

A statement from LPGA spokesman David Higdon said the tour is focused on play at this week's U.S. Women's Open.

Ochoa seeks second straight on LPGA Tour

Williamsburg, Va -- Lorena Ochoa, seeking her second straight LPGA Tour victory, grabbed the lead Thursday after one round at the Michelob Ultra Open.

Ochoa shot a 7-under 64 at the Kingsmill River Course for a one-shot advantage over Lindsey Wright.

After morning rains, the weather quickly improved and low scores were plentiful.

Wright did not suffer a bogey to finish alone in second and those in third place at 66 included Sarah Lee, Hee-Won Han and Minea Blomqvist.

"It was a good start," said Ochoa. "In the morning it was raining and I thought it was going to be a long day. I was planning for it to be a delay. But it ended up being fine."

Ochoa won the most recent stop on the LPGA circuit in her native Mexico.
