Halle -- Lleyton Hewitt broke Roger Federer's 29-match Gerry Weber Open winning streak Saturday, downing the Swiss star 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the finals.
No. 8 seed Hewitt battled back from a set down to deal Federer a rare loss on grass surfaces, where he was 76-1 since 2003 heading into Sunday's championship in Halle, Germany.
Federer's last loss in Halle was in the 2002 semifinals.
Hewitt, who had to stage a rally for the second straight match, defeated the world No. 2 in just under 2 1/2 hours. The Australian also had to bounce back from a dropped set in his semifinals victory over Benjamin Becker.
With the win -- his 29th career victory and first since April 2009 -- Hewitt also snapped a personal 15-match losing streak to Federer.

Halle, Germany -- Lleyton Hewitt dominated his match Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open grass-court tennis tournament in Germany.
Hewitt, the No. 8 seed, blitzed Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-3, losing only eight points on serve. Hewitt also had three service breaks in winning the second-round match.
He next goes against Andreas Beck, who got by Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). Kiefer had 16 aces but also 12 double faults.
Wednesday's other second-round matches saw Lukas Lacko rally for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Dominik Meffert and Philipp Petzschner top Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Lacko and Petzschner will meet in Friday's quarters.

Halle -- Lleyton Hewitt collected a straight-set victory but two seeded players were beaten Monday as the grass-court season opened at the Gerry Weber Open in Germany.
Hewitt, seeded eighth, breezed by Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-2 losing just nine points in his eight service games. Hewitt broke Luczak's serve four times and more than half -- 24-of-47 -- of the points when Luczak was serving.
No. 4-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero and seventh-seeded Marcos Baghdatis were both upset in straight sets in their first-round matches.
Dominik Meffert stopped Ferrero 6-3, 7-5, facing just one break point and turning the match with one service break in each set. Philipp Petzschner ousted Baghdatis 6-4, 6-3 in 69 minutes behind three breaks.

Tokyo -- Unseeded Mikhail Youzhny continued his series of upsets Saturday with a surprising victory over Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals of the Japan Open.
Youzhny defeated his third straight seeded opponent, knocking off the No. 8 Hewitt 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
That set up a championship meeting Sunday with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded second in this event. Tsonga did not face a break point during the entire match in defeating Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-3.
Youzhny and Tsonga have met only once, in the 2008 Australian Open, and Tsonga recorded a straight-sets victory in that one.
Both finalists will be seeking their fifth career title.

New York -- Roger Federer rallied to beat Lleyton Hewitt in four sets Saturday in a fourth-round match at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York.
The scores, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, sent the reigning five-time men's Open champion into the tournament's second week for the sixth straight year, despite 59 unforced errors.
"I don't make it easy all the time, but I try to play my best," Federer told New York Newsday after his 14th win in a row over Hewitt.
He has not lost at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center since 2003.
In another early men's match, No. 15 Radek Stepanek beat 23rd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

New York, Sept. 5: Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal had to work for their victories Friday before reaching the third round of the U.S. Open.
The leading players in the men's draw have had little trouble during the opening week of the tournament, but that changed Friday for two of the top three in the field.
The second-seeded Murray had 22 unforced errors over the first two sets before finally disposing of Paul Capdeville 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Nadal, seeded third, played the late-night match and eventually defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Murray's third-round opponent will be Taylor Dent, who survived an epic match against Ivan Navarro.

Cincinnati, Aug. 19: Sam Querrey highlighted second-round action Wednesday at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters by eliminating Andy Roddick in two tiebreaks.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the event's top two seeds, both advanced and Andy Murray survived as well.
The fifth-seeded Roddick, however, lost a 13-11 tiebreak in the opening set and then dropped the second in a 7-3 tiebreaker. That put Querrey in the third round against Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-3.
Federer opened his tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jose Acasuso. That set up a third-round meeting with David Ferrer, who had won his second-round match Tuesday.

Mason, Ohio -- Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt took an opening-round win Tuesday at the $3 million Western & Southern Financial Masters.
Tenth-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez and 11th-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco were both upset in the first round.
Hewitt came from behind to knock off French Open runner-up Robin Soderling of Sweden 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Hewitt reached the finals in Cincinnati in 2002 and 2004.
Czech Tomas Berdych beat Gonzalez 6-4, retired, and Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat countryman Verdasco 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).
Russian Mikhail Youzhny defeated Romanian Victor Hanescu 7-5, 6-2 and Austrian Jurgen Melzer beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7).

Washington, Aug. 6: Andy Roddick picked up his 500th career victory Thursday, a win that moved him into the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Classic.
Roddick, the top seed and a three-time winner of the event, survived a difficult battle with Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Querrey won last week's tour stop in Los Angeles.
The only other active players with 500 victories are Roger Federer, Carlos Moya and Lleyton Hewitt, who lost Thursday to second-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).
Roddick's quarterfinal opponent will be Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-1. Del Potro will next meet Robin Soderling, who survived against Marc Gicquel 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

Washington, Aug. 5: Top-seeded Andy Roddick coasted into the third round of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Benjamin Becker.
Roddick, gearing up for next month's U.S. Open, will next meet Sam Querrey, who is coming off his triumph last week in Los Angeles.
Querrey advanced past the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Igor Kunitsyn.
No. 4 seed Fernando Gonzalez reached the third round by surviving against qualifier Alejandro Falla 7-5, 7-5. His third-round opponent will be Wayne Odesnik, who dropped Igor Andreev 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Hewitt, the 2004 champion, defeated American Donald Young, 7-5, 6-2.
Russian Mikhail Youzhny beat American Robert Kendrick 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 and Colombia's Alejandro Falla defeated American Jesse Witten 6-1, 6-4.
Germany's Philipp Petzschner lost the first set, but rebounded to beat Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and India's Somdev Devvarman beat Japan's Yuichi Sugita 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan beat Michael Russell of the United States 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Canada's Frank Dancevic beat Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-3.

London, June 24: Andy Murray needed a tough effort to finally get past upset-minded US player Robert Kendrick 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 to thrill a Centre court crowd Wednesday at Wimbledon.
Third seed Murray fired 20 aces, with Kendrick producing 16 of his own.
"It was a tough match," said Murray, who has been the target of national sporting pressure in the run-up to Wimbledon. "I expected to be difficult. He played great for two or three sets and made it difficult for me. I didn't return as well as I liked, but I'm happy with how I served. There were a lot of big points and important moments."
The Scot who is making his fourth Wimbledon appearance and has never lost in the first round. "I knew I had to play well, and I did in the end," he said.
