Li advances to Danish Open quarterfinals

Copenhagen, Denmark -- Second-seeded Li Na rolled through a second-round victory Wednesday at the Danish Open tennis tournament.

Li topped Elena Baltacha 6-3, 6-2 without dropping serve. She lost 14 points on serve but only three in the second set. Li placed 75 percent of her first serves and won 74 percent of the points on serve in the match.

Fifth-seeded Julia Goerges also advanced to Friday's quarterfinals in straight sets, ousting Kristina Barrois 6-2, 6-2. She had Barrois on the defensive throughout the match, forcing 16 break-point situations and finishing off four of them.

Li downs error-prone Sharapova at Aegon

Birmingham -- Top-seeded Li Na of China claimed her first title of the year Saturday, defeating Maria Sharapova to win the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, England.

Li triumphed in straight sets 7-5, 6-1, taking advantage of seven double faults by the Russian star.

Sharapova's inaccuracy worked against her in the final, and she managed to win only 56 percent of her first serves. Li turned it on the second set, taking all 12 of her first serve points and 4-of-5 second serve points to win going away.

The win was the third in Li's career and first since 2008 at the Australian Gold Coast event. She improved to 3-4 in WTA Tour finals and won her second straight Birmingham match against Sharapova. Li also downed the Russian in last year's semifinals.

Li back in Aegon Classic semifinals

Birmingham, England -- Top-seeded Li Na, last year's tournament runner-up, completed two wins Friday and made the semifinals of the Aegon Classic in England.

Li finished off a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 third-round victory over Angelique Kerber before taking a 6-4, 6-2 quarterfinal match from Kaia Kanepi, who also played two opponents Friday.

Li managed five service breaks on Kanepi, wining nearly half the points on Kanepi's service despite the Estonian's six aces.

Li lost in the 2009 Aegon Classic final to Magdalena Rybarikova.

Second-seeded Maria Sharapova also qualified for the semifinals in straight sets, knocking off Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2, 6-4. Sharapova fired seven aces -- and had three double faults -- and didn't suffer a break of serve.

Li Na reaches second round in Miami

Miami -- Li Na and Gisela Dulko were among those surviving their first-round matches Thursday at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

Li fought off qualifier Urszula Radwanska 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 and Dulko eliminated Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2, 6-4. Dulko's victory set up a second-round match against former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.

The top 32 seeds in the tournament received byes past the first round.

Alexa Glatch advanced Thursday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Timea Bacsinszky, earning a meeting with top seed Serena Williams.

Williams has won this tournament five times and has captured the event each of the last two years.
