Washington -- Top-seeded Tomas Berdych survived a scare Thursday and No. 2 seed Andy Roddick was eliminated in the second round of the Legg Mason Classic.
The entire second round was scheduled for Thursday and the day's action was delayed by rain. Matches went on late into the night, however, so as to complete the round and set up Friday's quarterfinals.
Berdych, competing in a tournament for the first time since reaching the Wimbledon final, captured his second straight three-sets match. He fought off Andrey Golubev 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
The three-time champion Roddick went quietly against Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-3.
