New York -- The New York Yankees are set to announce the acquisition of first baseman Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros, the New York Post reported Friday.
Berkman gave his permission to the Astros to make the trade, the newspaper said. He has the right to reject a deal because he has 10 years of major league service and has been with the same team for the last five years.
Under baseball rules, a trade involving such a player cannot be announced until 24 hours after he has agreed to it. Berkman was not in the lineup Friday when the Astros hosted Milwaukee.
Although Berkman has spent much of his career at first base, he would likely become a designated hitter for the Yankees since, they have Mark Teixeira playing first.
