MLB: St. Louis 3, Cincinnati 2

St. Louis -- Mitchell Boggs and Kyle McClellan both worked out of late-inning trouble Friday to protect a one-run lead and bring St. Louis a 3-2 win over Cincinnati.

The Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak that dramatically reduced their hopes for a division title. They moved back within seven games of the Reds for the top spot in the National League Central.

Despite their deficit in the division race, the Cardinals have defeated the Reds in each of their last five meetings.

St. Louis was holding its 3-2 lead in the seventh when Boggs relieved starter Jaime Garcia with a runner on second and two away. Boggs struck out Drew Stubbs to end the threat.

MLB: St. Louis 4, Milwaukee 3

Milwaukee, Sept. 9: Matt Holliday crushed a Trevor Hoffman fastball in the ninth Tuesday for a two-run homer that rallied the St. Louis to a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hoffman (1-2) came on in the bottom of the ninth to hold a 3-2 lead but he walked Albert Pujols with one out and then served up a low fastball that Holliday drilled over the fence in straightaway center field at Miller Park.

Pujols hit his 45th homer of the season for the Cardinals, who have won nine of their last 11 games.

Blake Hawksworth (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief of John Smoltz, who game up three runs on six hits and struck out seven in five innings. Kyle McClellan earned the save, his third.

MLB: St. Louis 5, San Diego 1

San Diego, Aug. 21: A grand slam homer by Brendan Ryan and a four-hit performance by Joel Pineiro Thursday lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over San Diego.

The Cardinals are 3-1 on a seven-game western road trip and have reached 70 victories for the season.

Ryan's homer -- his second long ball of the season in 272 at bats -- came in the second inning. Pineiro (12-9) took over from there, carrying a two-hitter into the eighth inning.

Pineiro eventually loaded the bases with two away in the eighth and was replaced by Kyle McClellan, who got David Eckstein on a grounder to shortstop to end the threat.

MLB: St. Louis 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 2

Los Angeles, Aug. 20: Albert Pujols helped manufacture the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Wednesday and St. Louis held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

The Cardinals need one more victory to become the fourth team in the majors to reach the 70-win mark -- joining the Dodgers, the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees.

St. Louis held a 2-0 lead into the seventh before the Dodgers tied it on solo homers by Andre Ethier and Casey Blake.

It was still 2-2 heading into the ninth, but Pujols drew a leadoff walk on a 3-2 pitch off Jonathan Broxton (7-1), who suffered his first setback of the season.

MLB: St. Louis 12, N.Y. Mets 7

New York, Aug. 4: Albert Pujols hit a grand slam homer in the 10th inning Tuesday to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 12-7 victory over the New York Mets.

Pujols wound up 4-for-5 with two home runs and St. Louis scored eight runs over the final three innings.

The Mets held a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the eighth, but Pujols' first homer cut into the Cardinals' deficit. St. Louis rallied to tie the game in the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez, who suffered his fourth blown save of the season.

Kyle McClellan (3-2) pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth but St. Louis went ahead in the 10th with a one-out rally.
