Kurt Busch wins NASCAR pole

Brooklyn, Mich. -- Kurt Busch won his second pole of the season Friday with the fastest qualifying lap for this weekend's Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Busch, who has won twice at this track, posted a speed of 189.984 mph for his one qualifying lap. It was the 12th pole of his Sprint Cup career.

Showers fell at the conclusion of qualifying and wiped out the practice session scheduled for late in the day.

Jamie McMurray will start alongside Busch, having missed the pole by .04 of a second.

Four-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson qualified third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Jeff Burton.

Mark Martin won the spring race in Michigan last year and Brian Vickers captured the event held in August.

Coca Cola 600

Concord, N.C. -- Kurt Busch held off a late push by Jamie McMurray Sunday to capture the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Busch, who led 252 of the race's 400 laps, finished 0.737 seconds ahead of McMurray for his second win of the season and his 22nd Sprint Cup Series win overall.

McMurray's late charge, if successful, would have given team owner Chip Ganassi a second big win on the day. Ganassi's IndyCar driver, Dario Franchitti, won the Indianapolis 500 Sunday.

Kyle Busch finished third at Charlotte, followed by Mark Martin and David Reutimann.

Kurt Busch takes $1M All-Star race

Concord, N.C. -- Kurt Busch didn't let a run-in with the wall stop him Saturday, pulling away late to win the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Busch took over the lead with eight laps to go, passing Denny Hamlin after Hamlin caused him to bounce off the wall by blocking younger brother Kyle Busch.

Kurt Busch pulled away on restarts after two more wrecks, easily gaining a lead and cruising to his first win of the all-star race in nine attempts, collecting $1.08 million in the process.

Martin Truex Jr. finished second after transferring into the race thanks to a win in the 40-lap preliminary event. Joey Logano, meanwhile, took third.

Hamlin and defending all-star winner Tony Stewart finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Hamlin wins Darlington for weekend sweep

Darlington, S.C. -- Denny Hamlin took advantage of pit mishaps by Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton Saturday to win the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Hamlin crossed the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of pole sitter Jamie McMurray to grab his third win in the last six Sprint Cup races. He also won Friday's Nationwide Series race at Darlington, giving him a weekend sweep.

Gordon fell back to the last car on the lead lap after he was blocked by Tony Stewart and missed the entrance to make his final pit stop.

Burton passed Hamlin with 26 laps left, but during a caution, Hamlin took only two tires on the final pit stop and exited first while Burton had to serve a pass-through penalty after running over his air hose.

Kurt Busch claims wild Atlanta victory

Atlanta -- Kurt Busch rallied from fourth place into the winner's circle Sunday, coming from behind to claim a wild Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Busch took the lead following a first green-white-checkered attempt and then hung on after a second two-lap overtime finish to claim the win.

Busch was ahead in the closing laps, but Carl Edwards mounted a challenge when he bumped Brad Keselowski from behind, sending him flying upside down into the wall to set up the first overtime attempt.

As most of the leaders pitted for the last time, Clint Bowyer remained on the track and took over the top position. But Busch maneuvered past him and Paul Menard after the restart to reclaim the lead.

Kurt Busch wins Dickies 500 in Texas

Fort Worth, Texas, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Kurt Busch drove to his second Sprint Cup victory of the season Sunday, winning the Dickies 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Busch conserved enough fuel to finish ahead of the field after taking the lead from his younger brother, Kyle, who ran out of gas with less than three laps to go.

Denny Hamlin ended up in second place, Matt Kenseth finished third, Mark Martin fourth and Kevin Harvick fifth.

"I saw (Kyle) peel off a couple of laps before us, and I wanted to get to him, but I didn't want to get there too fast because you got to save a little bit of fuel, but yet I knew what we had for fuel mileage," said Kurt Busch, who also won a race in Atlanta in March.

Sprint race at Watkins Glen rained out

Watkins Glen, N.Y. Aug. 9: A thunderstorm Sunday forced the postponement of the Sprint Cup Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips auto race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

This is the second straight week a race was postponed by rain. Last week, it was the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono.

Officials announced the postponement until noon Monday just before the command was given to start engines at 4 p.m. EDT.

NASCAR decided there was not enough daylight left to run the advertised 90-lap distance in its second road course race this season.

Jimmie Johnson will start on the pole after winning Friday's qualifying session. He has yet to win at either Watkins Glen or Sonoma, Calif., the site of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in June.

Johnson wins pole at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, N.Y. Aug. 7: Three-time defending Sprint Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson won his first pole of the year Friday for Sunday's race at Watkins Glen International.

Johnson covered the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course in 71.340 seconds (123.633 mph). It was his first pole victory since last November and his first ever in 16 tries on a road course.

"We did all the right things today," Johnson said. "The car could have been a little bit better. For us, it was a little bit adventurous from time to time in qualifying trim, but I guess we had fewer problems than everybody else in putting in really good laps."

Kurt Busch was second-quickest Friday, just .008 seconds behind Johnson.

Tony Stewart wins Sprint race at Daytona

Daytona BEACH, Fla. July 5: Tony Stewart won Saturday's Sprint Cup Coke Zero 400 auto race where several cars were involved in a late crash at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

The incident started when Kyle Busch tried to block Stewart's move to the outside on the final turn of the last lap. Busch's rear bumper hit Stewart's front end, causing Busch to spin around and slam hard into the wall.

Several other cars crashed but no serious injuries were reported.

"I don't like winning like that ... but I did what I had to do," Stewart said in a post-race interview after his second victory this season. "That's not the way you want to win these things. You feel bad because you want him to have a good day too."

Kurt Busch wins Kobalt Tolls 500

Hampton, Ga. -- Kurt Busch led for 235 laps Sunday on the way to winning the Sprint Cup Kobalt Tolls 500 auto race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga.

The race was marred by 14 caution flags.

Busch grabbed the lead from Carl Edwards with one lap remaining, and then held off a hard-charging Jeff Gordon to record the 19th Sprint Cup win of his career.

The ecstatic winner drove his No. 2 Dodge Challenger backwards almost a full lap to celebrate his second career win at the AMS.

"This was an incredible race (and) this car was unbelievable," Busch said in a post-race television interview. "I've got to thank my (crew)."

Gordon, the series' points leader, finished second. Edwards was third, with Kevin Harvick and Brian Vickers rounding out the top-five.
