Cubs release veteran IF Millar

Mesa, Ariz. -- Veteran infielder Kevin Millar was among four players cut by the Chicago Cubs, the team said Tuesday.

The 38-year-old Millar was given his release. He played with Toronto last season, batting .223 with seven homers and 29 RBI in 78 games with the Blue Jays. His 12-year career has included stints with Florida, Boston, Baltimore and Toronto.

In the span he has played in 1,427 games in which he batted .274 with 170 homers and 699 RBI.

The Cubs on Tuesday also optioned infielder Micah Hoffpauir and outfielder Sam Fuld to Triple-A Iowa and assigned catcher Chris Robinson to minor league camp.

MLB: Toronto 8, Boston 7

Boston, Sept. 29: Adam Lind had three home runs and four RBI Tuesday to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox could have clinched the American League wild-card berth with a win, as their magic number is one.

Lind had his first career three-homer game, hitting one in the first, fifth and seventh innings. Jose Bautista and Aaron Hill also homered and Kevin Millar went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Toronto, which has won five in a row and eight of nine.

Ricky Romero (13-9) got the win after limiting the Red Sox to two runs on seven hits in five innings.

Clay Buchholz (7-4) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in five innings.

MLB: Toronto 5, Seattle 4

Toronto, Sept. 27: Rod Barajas hit an eighth-inning RBI double Sunday, rallying Toronto to a 5-4 victory against Seattle.
Toronto overcame a 3-0 fifth-inning deficit.

Barajas also hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving him two RBI.
Jose Bautista had two hits and one RBI, while Kevin Millar and Adam Lind had one RBI each for the Blue Jays, who won the final three contests in the four-game series.

The winner was Brian Wolfe (2-2).

Shawn Camp earned his first save.

Seattle scored its runs on solo homers from Kenji Johjima, Matt Tuiasosopo, Franklin Gutierrez and Mike Sweeney.

Johjima had two of the seven hits for the Mariners, who have lost four of five.

The losing pitcher was starter Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-4).

MLB: Tampa Bay 10, Toronto 9

St. Petersburg, Fla. July 8: Ben Zobrist's fourth RBI of the game, coming on a two-out single in the ninth inning Wednesday, lifted Tampa Bay to a wild 10-9 win over Toronto.

The Rays twice let a three-run lead get away before coming through in the ninth, winning their second straight on the heels of a four-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay blew a 5-2 lead when Toronto scored three times in the fourth, but the Rays came back in their half of the fourth with a three-run homer from Zobrist.

The Rays were in front 9-6 going into the seventh, only to have Scott Rolen, Kevin Millar and Alex Rios drive in runs to again tie it up.

MLB: Toronto 8, Texas 7 (11 innings)

Toronto -- A deep drive to left-center by Kevin Millar with none out in the 11th brought home Vernon Wells from third Wednesday, delivering Toronto an 8-7 win over Texas.

The Blue Jays let a three-run lead get away in the ninth inning, but eventually scored the game winner against Darren O'Day (0-1), who came to the Rangers this week from the New York Mets on a waiver claim.

Making his first appearance alongside players he had barely had time to meet, O'Day walked Wells to open the 11th. Travis Snider sacrificed Wells to second and Scott Rolen was intentionally walked before Millar lined a shot into the gap for what was officially recorded as a single.
