Indians place P Wood on disabled list

Cleveland -- The Cleveland Indians placed reliever Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right index finger blister.

The move is retroactive to July 12 and is the 14th time the 33-year-old closer has been put on the DL in his career. Wood also spent time on the shelf earlier this year with a back strain.

He has appeared in 23 games with the Indians this year, compiling a 6.30 ERA and converting eight of 11 save opportunities.

Cleveland recalled reliever Jensen Lewis from Class AAA Columbus to take Wood's spot on the roster.

Indians reliever Wood out 6-to-8 weeks

Goodyear, Ariz. -- Cleveland Indians reliever Kerry Wood will be out 6-to-8 weeks with a strained shoulder muscle, team officials said Saturday.

Indians head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that Wood had strained his right latissimus dorsi muscle, located under shoulder, and underwent an MRI examination Thursday after complaining of pain in his right arm pit.

"It's a setback," Tribe General Manager Mark Shapiro told the newspaper. "In the second half of last season Kerry showed dominant numbers and was a dominant guy.

We haven't really had any challenging news this spring. You expect something to come up."

MLB: Cleveland 5, Baltimore 4

Baltimore, Aug. 27: Andy Marte, his team down to its final strike in the ninth inning, came through with a two-run homer Thursday that gave Cleveland a 5-4 win over Baltimore.

The Orioles seemed on their way to a 4-3 victory when closer Jim Johnson (3-5) retired the first two batters in the ninth on grounders. Matt LaPorta, however, kept the inning alive with a single to center at the end of a seven-pitch at bat.

Marte, who spent most of this year with Class AAA Columbus, then worked Johnson for a 3-2 count before hitting his second home run of the season.
