Surgery postponed for Angels' Morales

Anaheim, Calif. -- Surgery has been put off for Los Angeles Angels first baseman Kendry Morales, who broke his leg during a home run celebration, the team orthopedist said Sunday.

Morales, who is hitting .290 with 11 homers and 39 RBI, socked a walk-off, game-winning grand slam against the Seattle Mariners Saturday, and as he leaped into a throng of celebrating teammates at home plate, he landed awkwardly and remained on the ground.

Morales was fitted with an air cast, carried off the field on a stretcher, and taken to a hospital, where X-rays revealed a fracture of his lower left leg.

Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 9: John Lackey allowed four hits over 7 1/3 innings Thursday and Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-0 playoff win over Boston.

It was only the second victory for the Angels over the Red Sox in their last 14 post-season meetings.

In the opening game of their American League Division Series, Lackey collected his first post-season victory in seven years. He walked just one batter, struck out four and threw 114 pitches before being relieved by Darren Oliver with one out in the eighth and a runner on second base.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 11, Texas 0

Santana (8-8) went the distance, scattering seven hits, walking one and striking out three for the Angels, who won their third straight division title.

Morales drove in two runs with his 33rd home run of the season in the first inning, when the Angels scored three runs. Vladimir Guerrero, Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar each drove in two runs and Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter each drove in one for the Angels, who came into the four-game series with the Rangers needing one victory to clinch the division crown.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 7, Oakland 4

Anaheim, Calif., Sept. 27: Kendry Morales had three hits and three RBI Sunday, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-4 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Morales' 32nd homer of the season, a two-run blast, gave Los Angeles a 4-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the third.

Maicer Izturis hit a two-run eighth-inning double, Mike Napoli hit a solo homer, and Vladimir Guerrero added an RBI single for the Angels -- who snapped a four-game losing streak and reduced their magic number for clinching the AL West title to two. The second-place Texas Rangers face elimination from the division race if they drop any of the four games in the series set to begin in Anaheim Monday.

MLB: New York Yankees 6, LA Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif., Sept. 23: Alex Rodriguez drove in the winning run in the ninth inning Tuesday and the New York Yankees held off the Los Angeles Angels 6-5.

The Yankees had already clinched a playoff berth when the Oakland A's beat the Texas Rangers earlier in the evening.

Rodriguez broke a 5-5 tie with a sacrifice fly in the ninth -- one inning after the Angels scored the tying run to complete a comeback from a 5-0 deficit.

Rodriguez also belted a two-run homer in the game between potential playoff rivals.
Despite the loss, the Angels reduced their magic number for clinching the AL West title to five.

MLB: LA Angels 5, New York Yankees 2

Anahiem, Calif., Sept. 22: Joe Saunders went 8 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees Monday 5-2.

Saunders (14-7), who struck out three and allowed no walks, won his fifth straight with no losses since coming off the disabled list last month. His ERA during that span is 2.51.

Kendry Morales hit his 31st home run for the Angels, who reduced their magic number for clinching the AL West to six with 12 games to play. The second-place Texas Rangers beat Oakland Monday 10-3.

The Yankees' loss -- combined with the Rangers' victory -- prevented New York from clinching a spot in the playoffs.

Morales hit two home runs and had six RBI in helping Los Angeles break out of an offensive slump.

The Angels appeared headed for what would have been their seventh loss in nine games when Oakland built a 6-1 lead through five innings.

Los Angeles got a run back in the sixth, when Morales doubled home Vladimir Guerrero, and the Angels then stormed from behind in the seventh by sending 11 men to the plate and capitalizing on two Oakland errors.

The Angels increased their lead over Texas to five games in the American League West.

It was the second shutout and fourth complete game of Weaver's four-year career.
The Angels, who began action Wednesday with a 5 ½-game lead over Texas in the American League West, won their fifth straight.

Weaver (13-4) survived only 3 1/3 innings in his previous start against Baltimore Friday, giving up eight earned runs, nine hits and four walks. It was his shortest outing in more than a year.

Although he allowed the Indians seven hits, Cleveland did not have more than one runner on base in any inning.

Morales cops AL weekly award

New York -- Los Angeles Angels first baseman Kendry Morales' .423 batting average last week earned him American League player-of-the-week honors Monday.

In going 11-for-26, Morales clubbed five home runs and drove in 13 RBI -- best in the majors. His six RBI against Minnesota Sunday were a career-high.

It was the switch-hitting Cuban's first career weekly honor. He beat out Boston's Josh Beckett, Seattle's Jose Lopez and Baltimore's Adam Jones.
