Bondarenko, Wozniak upset in Hobart

Hobart -- Third-seeded Kateryna Bondarenko dropped a tight second-round match at the $220,000 Moorilla Hobart International tennis tournament in Australia.

Bondarenko, a Ukrainian, won more points -- 76-75 -- than Italy's Sara Errani but fell 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Half of the 22 games in the match resulted in service breaks but Errani got one more than Bondarenko in the second set to claim the win.

No. 2-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer played more to form, taking out Australian Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6-2 in an efficient 56 minutes. Peer lost only 11 points in eight service games and didn't face a break point.

Venus Williams upset at Rogers Cup

Toronto -- Venus Williams was upset Tuesday by Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko at the $2 million Rogers Cup.

The third-seeded Venus, a former world No. 1, lost to Bondarenko 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 in second-round action. Venus has now lost three of her last four matches, including a third-round setback in Cincinnati last week.

No. 11 Serb Ana Ivanovic, another former world No. 1, avoided an upset by Slovakian qualifier Magdalena Rybarikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 16 Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, last year's Rogers Cup runner-up, beat Italian Sara Errani 6-4, 6-2.

Schiavone breezes into Prague semis

Prague, Czech Republic July 17: Francesca Schiavone breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kateryna Bondarenko Friday, putting her in the semifinals of the Prague Open.

The top-seeded Schiavone will meet qualifier Timea Bacsinszky in the semifinals after Bacsinszky surprised fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4.

No. 2 seed Sybille Bammer survived in one of the best matches of the tournament, downing Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

Iveta Benesova ousted Zarina Divas 6-4, 6-1 to earn a semifinal match against Bammer.
