MLB: Detroit 8, Cleveland 1

Detroit -- Justin Verlander held Cleveland to one run over eight innings Sunday and the Detroit Tigers completed a sweep of the Indians 8-1.

Verlander (14-8) fanned eight, scattered seven hits and walked only one, raising his record against Cleveland over the past two seasons to 6-0. The Detroit ace tossed 115 pitches in the dominating performance, 82 of them for strikes.

Will Rhymes went 4-for-5, drove in a run and scored three times and Jhonny Peralta collected three RBI for the Tigers, who outscored the Indians 19-3 in the three-game weekend sweep.

Cleveland starter Jeanmar Gomez (3-2) lasted only three innings, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits.

MLB: Detroit 3, Tampa Bay 2

Detroit -- Justin Verlander gutted his way through six innings and Ryan Raburn homered Wednesday in the Detroit Tigers' 3-2 win over Tampa Bay.

Verlander (13-7) struggled with his control, issuing three walks, but got key outs when he needed them. The Tigers ace walked three but struck out seven, yielding six hits en route to his first win since July 22.

Ryan Perry tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and Jose Valverde notched his 22nd save despite allowing a run in the ninth.

Raburn's two-run shot in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and allowed Detroit to salvage one win in a three-game series with the Rays.

Tigers ink Verlander to $80 million deal

Detroit -- Justin Verlander, one of baseball's top right-handers, signed a five-year, $80 million contract extension Thursday, the Detroit Tigers announced.

The deal runs through the 2014 season and averts salary arbitration.

Verlander, 26, compiled a 19-9 record last season with just 63 walks and a major league-leading 269 strikeouts in 35 starts (240 innings).

His performance made him third in the voting for the American League Cy Young Award.

"It's a very happy moment for the organization," Detroit President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski said on the Tigers' Web site.

"I feel like I've grown up in this city," Verlander said. "I've made a name for myself here."

MLB: Detroit 5, Chi. White Sox 3

Detroit -- The Detroit Tigers kept their playoff hopes alive Sunday, beating the Chicago White Sox 5-3 and awaiting the result of Minnesota's game against Kansas City.

The Tigers had a half-game lead in the AL Central Division race but a Twins' victory over the Royals would set up a one-game playoff Tuesday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Detroit starter and winner Justin Verlander (19-9) carried a two-hit shutout into the top of the eighth, but Chicago scored three times to make the contest interesting.

Ryan Raburn swatted two home runs and drove in three runs and Magglio Ordonex hit a solo shot for the Tigers.

Brent Lillibridge led Chicago with two hits and one RBI.

The losing pitcher was starter John Danks (13-11).

MLB: Detroit 6, Minnesota 5 (2nd game)

Detroit, Sept. 29: Magglio Ordonez and Brandon Inge each had two RBI Tuesday when the Detroit Tigers beat Minnesota 6-5 to split a doubleheader.

Minnesota won the first game 3-2 to close to within one game of Detroit in the American League Central race. Detroit's win in the nightcap pushed its lead in the division back to two games.

Miguel Cabrera hit a solo home run, walked and scored twice and Curtis Granderson homered in the bottom of the eighth for the Tigers.

Justin Verlander (18-9) gave up four runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in eight innings for the win.

Jason Kubel's two-run double in the eighth cut the Tigers' lead to 5-4.

MLB: Detroit 6, Cleveland 5

Cleveland, Sept. 24: Brandon Inge contributed the first of three straight RBI singles in a four-run fourth Thursday and Detroit survived a shaky ninth to nip Cleveland 6-5.

The Indians lost their 11th straight, falling to a team that picked up a key three-game sweep in its bid to claim a division title.

Detroit moved three games in front of idle Minnesota in the American League Central with 10 games to play. The Tigers and Twins will meet four times next week in Detroit.

Inge, Gerald Laird and Ramon Santiago had consecutive run-scoring singles in the fourth and Curtis Granderson drove in another run with a fielder's-choice grounder to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.

MLB: Kansas City 5, Detroit 1

Kansas City, Mo. Sept. 10: Billy Butler had three doubles and drove in a run apiece with two of them Wednesday in leading the Kansas City Royals to a 5-1 win over Detroit.

Robinson Tejeda (2-1) struck out eight in throwing six shutout innings. It was Tejada's second start in place of the ailing Gil Meche and Tejada ran his scoreless streak to 11 1/3 innings.

Kansas City has won three in a row for the first time since July 4-6. Detroit has dropped two straight and saw its lead in the American League Central reduced to 5 1/2 games over Minnesota.

Butler scored the game's first run on a single by Mike Jacobs in the third and the lead remained 1-0 until Butler's first RBI double in the seventh.

MLB: Detroit 4, Tampa Bay 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. Sept. 4: Fernando Rodney retired the final batter with the potential winning run on second Friday, allowing Detroit to escape with a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay.

The score was deadlocked at 1-1 going into the ninth, during which the teams combined to score five times.

Detroit won its fourth straight and increased its lead in the American League Central to six games over Minnesota.

The Tigers took the lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Adam Everett. Curtis Granderson then drove in another run with a base hit and a sacrifice fly by Placido Polanco delivered what turned out to be the winning run.

Those three runs made a winner out of Detroit starter Justin Verlander (16-7), who gave up a run on four hits over eight innings.

MLB: Seattle 3, Detroit 1

Detroit, Aug. 19: Don Snell won his first game in a Seattle uniform Friday and Ichiro Suzuki contributed a two-run homer, lifting the Mariners over Detroit 3-1.

Snell (1-1), obtained from Pittsburgh prior to the July 31 trade deadline, was making his fourth start for the Mariners. His last two appearances were struggles, including one in which he gave up six walks in 1 1/3 innings.

He allowed the Tigers only a run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday.

David Aardsma allowed a hit in the ninth but struck out two to collect his 28th save.

MLB: Detroit 2, Boston 0

Boston -- Detroit's Justin Verlander hurled eight scoreless innings Thursday en route to a 2-0 Tigers victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Verlander (13-6) yielded four hits and struck out eight batters before he was replaced by Fernando Rodney, who racked up his 24th save of the season.

Ryan Raburn drove in Detroit's runs with a solo homer and infield hit.

Clay Buchholz (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Victor Martinez had two of Boston's four hits.

The loss was Boston's seventh in 10 games.

Detroit, Aug. 3: Clete Thomas homered with two outs in the ninth inning Monday to give the Detroit Tigers a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Miguel Cabrera had a homer and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who have won two in a row. Placido Polanco and Ramon Santiago each had an RBI in the win.

Fernando Rodney (2-2) earned the victory by pitching a perfect ninth.

Brian Roberts had a solo homer for the Orioles, who have lost four in a row and 13 of their last 17 games. Luke Scott had a two-run double and Ty Wigginton and Aubrey Huff each had an RBI in the loss.

Detroit starter Justin Verlander gave up five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in eight innings.

MLB: Detroit 13, Texas 5

Arlington, Texas July 29: Curtis Granderson hit two homers and Miguel Cabrera had four hits and four RBI Wednesday, sending Detroit coasting past Texas 13-5.

The Tigers, who had struggled at the plate while losing three in a row, equaled a season high with 19 hits.

Detroit scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings, finishing things off with a four-run seventh that featured a three-run homer by Cabrera.

Granderson led off the first with a homer for the second time in the series and tacked on a two-run blast in the second.

The 13 runs were the most Texas had allowed since giving up 15 to Detroit in the fourth game of the season.
