MLB: Washington 4, Pittsburgh 2

Washington -- Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham and Mike Morse all homered Thursday in helping the Washington Nationals down Pittsburgh 4-2 and sweep their three-game series.

It was the first three-game sweep for the Nationals this season.

Dunn hit his 13th homer of the year and Willingham had his 12th, both of them coming in the fourth. Mike Morse produced Washington's third solo homer of the game in the eighth.

That was enough for Livan Hernandez (5-3), who collected his first win since May 4. He gave up two runs on five hits over six innings. Hernandez has allowed up two runs or less in 10 of his 12 starts.

Washington had won just once in five outings prior to the Pittsburgh series, which began with the successful debut of pitcher Stephen Strasburg.

MLB: Atlanta 6, Washington 3 (10 inn.)

Washington, Sept. 27: Atlanta scored three times in the top of the 10th inning Sunday to beat Washington 6-3, capping a three-game sweep.

In the pivotal inning, Brian McCann's ground out drove in the game-winner and Omar Infante delivered a two-out, two-run single.

Yunel Escobar had two hits and one RBI.

Two others also had one RBI, while Chipper Jones added two hits for the Braves, who have won 10 straight on the road, one shy of the franchise record, maintaining their slim post-season hopes.

The winner was Mike Gonzalez (4-4).

Closer Rafael Soriano earned his 27th save with a 1-2-3 10th.

Washington's Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham hit back-to-back first-inning homers.

MLB: Washington 5, Cincinnati 4

Cincinnati, Aug. 16: Josh Willingham had a three-run home run and three RBI for the Washington Nationals Sunday in a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Ryan Zimmerman singled in a run and Adam Dunn had two doubles and scored three runs for the Nationals, who took three out of four games from the Reds and have won 11 of their last 14.

Jorge Sosa (2-1) got the win in relief, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Jonny Gomes cracked a a three-run homer in the Reds' fifth loss in seven games.

Reliever Arthur Rhodes (0-1) took the loss.

MLB: Washington 7, Arizona 6

Washington, Aug. 7: Josh Willingham had three hits and two RBI Friday, leading Washington to a 7-6 win over Arizona.

Willingham had three of the Nationals' 11 hits in their sixth straight win, and his two-run single snapped a 5-5 tie with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan Zimmerman's solo homer created the tie earlier in the seventh.

Elijah Dukes had three RBI, Wil Nieves one, while Christian Guzman added three hits for the Nationals, who have won three of four against the Diamondbacks this season.

Jason Bergmann (2-1) got the win, and closer Mike MacDougal picked up his 11th save.

Arizona's Mark Reynolds hit his 34th homer, a solo shot.

NL honors Lincecum, Willingham

New York -- The National League Monday named a red-hot pitcher, San Francisco's Tim Lincecum, and a punishing hitter, Washington's Josh Willingham, its players of the week.

Lincecum, 25, didn't give up an earned run in 17 innings while winning two starts last week. He notched a major league-best 23 strikeouts, including a career-high 15 in a complete game victory over Pittsburgh.

Willingham, 30, hit .435 in six games over the past week. His production included three home runs -- including two grand slams July 27 against Milwaukee -- and 11 runs batted. He had four multi-hit games, and posted a .913 slugging percentage and .519 on-base percentage.

It is the first career weekly award for both players.

MLB: Washington 5, Pittsburgh 3

Pittsburgh -- Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer and drove in a third run Sunday, powering Washington's 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He had two of Washington's nine hits and his effort capped a week in which he became the 13th player in Major League Baseball history to hit two grand slams. He achieved that feat in a 14-6 rout of Milwaukee Tuesday.

Alberto Gonzalez's two-run double accounted for the other runs by the Nationals, who broke a four-game losing streak.

The winner was former Pirate Sean Burnett (2-2). Closer Mike MacDougal recorded his seventh save.

Pittsburgh got a two-run, third-inning homer from Ronny Cedeno and a solo shot by Delwyn Young in the seventh.

MLB: Washington 3, N.Y. Mets 1

Washington, July 22: Craig Stammen and three relievers held New York to four hits Wednesday and Washington put together a rare winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Mets.

The Nationals ended a six-game losing skid and have won back-to-back games for the first time since July 4-5.

Stammen (3-5) gave up all four hits and one run while striking out five over 7 1/3 innings. The Washington relief corps did not allow a base runner, with Mike MacDougal working the ninth for his sixth save.

Josh Willingham went 4-for-4 and produced a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the sixth.

The loss went to Mike Pelfrey (7-6), who surrendered three runs on six hits in seven innings.

New York did not put a runner on base until David Wright singled to open the fifth.

MLB: Washington 13, Houston 2

Houstonn, July 11: Craig Stammen pitched his first career complete game Saturday and the Washington Nationals amassed 21 hits in a 13-2 rout of the Houston Astros.

The hit total represented a franchise high since the former Montreal Expos moved to Washington in 2005.

Josh Willingham hit two homers with four RBI, Nick Johnson and Adam Dunn hit solo shots, Alberto Gonzalez had four hits and two RBI, Johnson had three hits and two RBI and Ronnie Belliard had two hits.

Stammen was one of three others with one RBI, while Dunn and Cristian Guzman had two hits apiece for the Nationals, who ended a four-game losing streak.

Stammen (2-4) surrendered nine hits in his best effort in the majors.

MLB: Colorado 5, Washington 4

Denver, July 8: Clint Barmes drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly for the Colorado Rockies in their 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals Tuesday.

Barmes had a pair of RBI in support of Alan Embree (2-2), who oddly enough picked up the win by picking off Austin Kearns in the eighth inning to retire the Nats without throwing a pitch to a batter.

Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham homered for the Nationals, who outhit the Rockies 11-8 but were hampered by three errors. Julian Tavarez (3-7) took the loss in relief of starter Jordan Zimmerman, who gave up four runs in four innings.

Colorado got to Zimmerman for a run in the first inning when Barmes scored from second on a two-out single by Brad Hawpe.
