Damon's milestone hit came in the third when he grounded a single under the glove of Orioles shortstop Julio Lugo, becoming the 92nd player in major league history to reach that level.

Justin Verlander, making his third career opening day start for the Tigers, and the winner of 19 games last season, was taken out after five innings. He allowed four runs on six hits and threw 93 pitches.

Verlander finished third in last year's Cy Young balloting. The win went to Joel Zumaya, who threw a scoreless sixth inning.

Damon, Tigers agree to one-year contract

Lakeland -- Veteran outfielder Johnny Damon and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year contract, the American League team said Monday.
