John Lackey

Same starting pitchers for Sunday ALCS

New York -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi says the rainout of Saturday's American League Championship Series will not change his plans to start Andy Pettitte.

Pettitte will take the mound Sunday at Yankee Stadium with a chance to clinch a World Series berth if he can defeat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Joe Saunders.

Girardi told the media Saturday that he was not considering going with another starter in Game 6 after having to put Pettitte on ice for 24 hours.

"We think the extra day could help him physically," Girardi said. "He was on short day the last time. He's been good on extra day too. So I don't really worry about him going on an extra day."

The series winner will face Philadelphia in the Fall Classic.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 5, Boston 0

Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 9: John Lackey allowed four hits over 7 1/3 innings Thursday and Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-0 playoff win over Boston.

It was only the second victory for the Angels over the Red Sox in their last 14 post-season meetings.

In the opening game of their American League Division Series, Lackey collected his first post-season victory in seven years. He walked just one batter, struck out four and threw 114 pitches before being relieved by Darren Oliver with one out in the eighth and a runner on second base.

MLB: Boston 4, LA Angels 1

Boston, Sept. 16: Daisuke Matsuzaka returned to the mound for the first time in three months Tuesday to pitch Boston to a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Matsuzaka (2-5), in his first start since June 19, worked six-plus innings of three-hit, shutout ball for his first victory since June 2. The outing was the longest of the season for Matsuzaka, who had been out with a shoulder injury.

David Ortiz had a homer and two RBI for the Red Sox, who have won five in a row. Jason Bay also drove in a run for Boston, which increased its lead in the AL wild-card race to five games over Texas.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 3, Seattle 0

Anaheim, Calif. Sept. 11: John Lackey threw his first shutout in two years Thursday -- his fourth against Seattle -- carrying the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Mariners.

Lackey (10-7) struck out seven, gave up five hits and threw 111 pitches. It was the 14th complete game and eighth shutout in Lackey's eight-year career, all of it spent with the Angels.

Los Angeles won its third straight and moved five games in front of the idle Texas Rangers in the race for the American League West pennant.

Torii Hunter gave the Angels the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer and Erick Aybar added an RBI double in the seventh.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (3-3) gave up all three runs on 10 hits over seven innings to take the loss.

MLB: Cleveland 11, LA Angels 3

Cleveland, Aug. 20: Matt LaPorta and Asdrubal Cabrera each had two-run doubles in a seven-run sixth inning Thursday in Cleveland's 11-3 rout of the Los Angeles Angels.

The Indians' 16 hits cooled off the division-leading Angels, who had won their previous five games.

Justin Materson (4-4) threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, but he and the Indians were locked in a 1-1 deadlock before Cleveland produced its big inning. Masterson, acquired from Boston before the trade deadline, won his first game for Cleveland in his third start with his new team.

Los Angeles starter John Lackey (8-6) gave up five of the seven runs in the sixth while retiring only one batter.

Anaheim, Calif. Aug. 9: Derek Holland's complete-game three-hit shutout Sunday led the Texas Rangers to a 7-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

With 96 pitches, the right-hander walked one batter, struck out eight and threw only 23 balls the entire contest.

Marlon Byrd led Texas with three hits -- one a solo homer -- and three RBI. Taylor Teagarden hit a two-run homer and two runs scored on Bobby Abreu's fourth-inning error for the Rangers, who won twice in the three-game series, moving within 3 1/2 games of the Angels in the American League West.

MLB: LA Angels 9, Cleveland 3

Anaheim, Calif. July 29: Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer and drove in five Wednesday, leading the LA Angels to a 9-3 win over Cleveland.

Earlier, Kendrick also hit an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the fifth.

Kendry Morales had two hits and two RBI.

Bobby Abreu had two hits and one RBI, while one run scored on Shin-Soo Choo's fifth-inning error for the Angels, who have won 10 of their last 12 games.

MLB: LA Angels 1, Oakland 0

Oakland, Calif. July 19: Bobby Abreu's 10th-inning homer produced the lone run Sunday and gave the Los Angeles Angels a 1-0 win over Oakland.

Starters John Lackey of the Angels and Oakland's Brett Anderson were locked in a scoreless dual through eight innings before closer and losing pitcher Andrew Bailey (4-2) entered in the top of the ninth.

Abreu's homer, his seventh of the season, settled the issue with one out in the top of the 10th. He finished with two of the three hits for the Angels, who won three times in the four-game series.

Lackey (5-4) surrendered three hits in nine innings with a walk and six strikeouts.

Closer Brian Fuentes earned his 28th save despite giving up Bobby Crosby's one-out infield single.

MLB: LA Angels 5, N.Y. Yankees 4

Macier Izturis and Bobby Abreu led the Angels with two hits and one RBI apiece.

Izturis' run-scoring single in the seventh inning proved the game-winner after New York could do no better than pull within one with Jorge Posada's eighth-inning sacrifice fly.

Howie Kendrick and Robb Quinlan also had one RBI apiece for the Angels, who won five of seven heading into the All-Star break.

Lackey (4-4) walked three batters and struck out six in 111 pitches. Closer Brian Fuentes earned his 26th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Up by 9-4 in the ninth, LA came very close to blowing the lead when Pablo Sandoval hit his second homer of the night -- a two-out, three-run blast off reliever Kevin Jepsen.

Angels' closer Brian Fuentes came on to get the final out and record his 17th save.

Lackey (2-2) struck out 10, walked no one and allowed just three runs on 10 hits.

His offensive support also featured home runs by Juan Rivera, Bobby Abreu and Sean Rodriguez.

MLB: Seattle 5, Los Angeles Angels 2

Anaheim, Calif. -- Jason Vargas turned in another outstanding effort Friday and Seattle gave him enough run support to lift the Mariners past the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.

Vargas (2-0) was called up from the minors in early May and prior to Friday had allowed only three earned runs in 21 innings over three starts and two relief appearances.

He gave up four runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Angels and evened his career record over parts of four major league seasons at 8-8.

Three Seattle relievers allowed one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, with David Aardsma collecting his seventh save.

The Mariners took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles from Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre along with a sacrifice fly from Ken Griffey Jr.
