Kansas -- Minnesota's injured all-star Joe Mauer may be used as a designated hitter until he's ready to resume his regular job as catcher, Manager Ron Gardenhire said.
The Twins, who clinched the American League Central Division title nearly a week ago, were in Kansas City Tuesday for the second contest in a three-game series. The Royals took the opener Monday 10-8.
"Mauer swung ... and ran around," Gardenhire said in a report on the Twins' Web site. "He feels a lot better. I don't know if he's going to play here [in Kansas City] or not. He might want to DH [Tuesday] or the next day."
There were "no guarantees" that Mauer would get into the Royals series, Gardenhire said.

Minneapolis -- Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer will miss at least a couple of games with a sore left knee, the all-star catcher and his manager say.
Mauer, who left during Sunday's game, a 6-2 loss to Oakland, says he doesn't know how bad his injury is, MLB.com reported Monday. It's the same knee in which he tore the meniscus in 2004, his rookie season.
"I don't know. They say it's day to day. I really don't know a whole lot right now," he said.
"I'm just trying to get back on the field. I don't know a whole lot right now. I'm just trying to do whatever I can to get back there."
Mauer said he hurt his knee running out a groundout in the sixth inning.

Minneapolis -- Joe Mauer produced a key two-run single in the eighth Friday and Minnesota capitalized on a sloppy effort by Chicago in the field to defeat the White Sox 7-4.
Only two of the Twins runs were earned in a much-needed win that moved Minnesota within 3 1/2 games of the division-leading White Sox in the American League Central. Minnesota had captured only two of its previous nine games.
The Twins took a 4-0 lead in the fourth -- three of the runs unearned, through a combination of a fielding error by third baseman Dayan Viciedo and a throwing error by second baseman Gordon Beckham.
Chicago climbed within 4-2 before the Twins gave themselves some insurance with three runs in the eighth.
