Jim Johnson

MLB: Baltimore 3, Tampa Bay 2

St. Petersburg, Oct. 1 -- Jim Johnson retired Akinori Iwamura in the ninth inning with the tying run on third base Thursday, preserving the Baltimore Orioles' 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Orioles ended the third-longest losing streak in franchise history at 13 games. If Baltimore can win two of its three scheduled games against Toronto this weekend, the Orioles will avoid their first 100-loss season in 22 years.

Baltimore took a 3-1 lead into the ninth but Johnson gave up a run and had runners on first and third with two away. He then got Iwamura on a grounder back to the mound to pick up his ninth save.

MLB: Baltimore 4, Tampa Bay 2

Baltimore, Sept. 17: Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer with no one out in the ninth inning Wednesday to give Baltimore a rainy 4-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Rays continued their late-season collapse, during which they have lost 13 of 14 games.

After a rain delay in the eighth inning, Ben Zobrist hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth to lift Tampa Bay to a 2-2 tie.

Russ Springer (0-4) was brought in to try to take the game into extra innings, but failed to retire a batter.

Luke Scott drew a walk to lead off the ninth and Wieters hit the first pitch from Springer over the wall in left-center for his seventh homer of the season.

Jim Johnson (4-5) got the win despite giving up the home run to Zobrist.

MLB: Cleveland 5, Baltimore 4

Baltimore, Aug. 27: Andy Marte, his team down to its final strike in the ninth inning, came through with a two-run homer Thursday that gave Cleveland a 5-4 win over Baltimore.

The Orioles seemed on their way to a 4-3 victory when closer Jim Johnson (3-5) retired the first two batters in the ninth on grounders. Matt LaPorta, however, kept the inning alive with a single to center at the end of a seven-pitch at bat.

Marte, who spent most of this year with Class AAA Columbus, then worked Johnson for a 3-2 count before hitting his second home run of the season.

MLB: Baltimore 8, Tampa Bay 7

St. Petersburg, Fla. Aug. 20: Brian Roberts hit a grand slam in the sixth and Nolan Reimold had a three-run shot one inning later Thursday, lifting Baltimore to an 8-7 win over Tampa Bay.

Reimold's homer gave the Orioles an 8-4 cushion and they barely held onto the lead to salvage the final contest in the three-game series and avoid a sweep.

The Rays had a four-game winning streak snapped and fell four games behind Boston in the American League wild-card race. Baltimore had lost its previous five games.

Tampa Bay closed within one run with a three-run eighth -- two of the runs scoring on a broken-bat bloop to left by Carlos Pena.

MLB: Baltimore 7, Toronto 5

Toronto, Aug. 7: Rookie Nolan Reimold drove in a run during each of Baltimore's two big innings Friday, helping the Orioles get past Toronto 7-5.

Baltimore overcame a three-run deficit to snap a two-game skid.

The Orioles scored four times in the sixth off Ricky Romero (10-5), two of the tallies being unearned.

With the bases loaded and one away, Nick Markakis reached on a fielding error by first baseman Lyle Overbay that allowed two runs to score.

Aubrey Huff then singled in another run, and Markakis came in on a fielder's choice grounder by Reimold.

Reimold added an RBI single during Baltimore's three-run seventh.

Dawkins laments Jim Johnson's death

Denver, July 29: Hard-hitting strong safety Brian Dawkins of Denver is stunned by the death of Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

The 6-foot, 210-pound Dawkins played in Johnson's defensive schemes with the Eagles from 1999-2008. He signed a free-agent deal with the Broncos in February after the Eagles failed to re-sign him.

"This is a sad, sad day for myself and my Philadelphia family," he said Tuesday on Denver's Web site. "Jim was a tough coach who wasn't afraid to let you know how he was feeling, but at the same time, he cared about us deeply. He was an absolute blessing to me with the way he used me on the football field and allowed me to show my God-given ability. His confidence in me meant so much."

MLB: New York Yankees 2, Baltimore 1

New York, July 20: Hideki Matsui hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth Monday to give the New York Yankees a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

It was the third straight game the Yankees have won by 2-1. It was Matsui's second-career walk-off homer and New York's ninth walk-off victory this season.

The Yankees had just four hits -- none after Eric Hinske homered to start the second inning -- when Matsui drove a 2-2 pitch by Jim Johnson (3-4) over the wall in right field.

Alfredo Aceves (6-1) retired the final two batters in the top of the ninth to get the victory.

Nick Markakis homered to right-center field with one out in the opening inning for the Orioles, who lost for the third time in four games.
