Top-seed Jankovic loses in Moscow

Moscow -- Zarina Diyas routed top-seeded Jelena Jankovic in advancing Thursday to the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

Diyas, ranked No. 268 in the world, dispatched Jankovic 6-1, 6-2 in 60 minutes. It was the eighth loss in 16 matches for Jankovic, the world No. 7.

Diyas was able to finish all off five break points she had against Jankovic and won nearly two-thirds of the points in the match. She did drop serve once, which accounted for the bulk of the 10 points she lost on serve against Jankovic.

Jankovic defeated in China Open

Beijing -- Third-seeded Jelena Jankovic was defeated Monday in second-round action of the China Open in Beijing.

Jankovic had her serve broken eight times in 13 games in dropping a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 decision to Bojana Jovanovski. Jovanovski only had two break-point situations to deal with in the last two sets in beating Jankovic for the first time in her career.

No. 13-seeded Nadia Petrova got past Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 7-5 in her second-round match and Maria Kirilenko advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Gisela Dulko.

Jankovic, Krumm notch Beijing victories

Beijing -- Jelena Jankovic and Kimiko Date Krumm were among the first-round winners Saturday at the $4.5 million China Open in Beijing.

Jankovic of Serbia, who holds the third seed, got past Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 7-5. Jankovic won the China Open in 2008 and was runner-up the preceding year.

The 40-year-old Krumm, meanwhile, had little trouble with Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-0, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the National Tennis Center.

Sharapova defeated in WTA Tokyo tournament

Tokyo -- Jelena Jankovic took a second-round victory but defending champion Maria Sharapova was ousted Monday at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Sharapova, seeded 12th, was beaten by Kimiko Date Krumm, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Date Krumm, who turns 40 Tuesday, advanced to the second round by cashing in five of six break-point opportunities.

Jankovic, the No. 3 seed, headed to the third round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alona Bondarenko on the strength of a receiving game in which she took 59 percent of the points off Bondarenko's serve.

No. 6-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska eased past Olga Govortsova 6-2, 6-3 in the day's other second-round match.

Jankovic wins first-round U.S. Open match

New York -- Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic survived 48 unforced errors Tuesday, outlasting Romanian Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in U.S. Open first-round action.

The former world No. 1 took 2 hours, 20 minutes to down the 18-year-old Halep amid stifling heat at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where on-court temperatures soared past 100 degrees.

Jankovic, who finished second at the 2008 tourney to American great Serena Williams, advanced to face Croat Mirjana Lucic in the second round.

Meanwhile, former U.S. Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, the 11th seed, defeated 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, winning in just under 2 hours on the Grandstand Court.

Jankovic through to Cincy third round

Cincinnati -- Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic advanced to the third round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open with a win over Vera Dushevina Tuesday.

The world's second-ranked player, and defending Cincinnati champ outlasted, Dushevina 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Jankovic defeated Dinara Safina in the final last year.
Another second-round match saw 16th-seeded Marion Bartoli notch a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Alona Bondarenko.

In first-round action Tuesday, 10th-seeded Maria Sharapova defeated fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Kuznetsova was coming off a victory last week in San Diego.

Struggles continue for Jankovic

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Alisa Kleybanova added to Jelena Jankovic's recent struggles Wednesday by eliminating the No. 1 seed from the Mercury Insurance Open.

Kleybanova defeated Jankovic in the second round 7-5, 6-1. Jankovic had received a bye past the first round, but lost for the third time in four matches on the WTA Tour.

After retiring in the fourth round at Wimbledon, she won just one match in Slovenia before falling in her opening contest at this event.

Kleybanova will next meet either Jie Zheng or Daniela Hantuchova, who will face each other in a second-round match Thursday.

Second-seeded Samantha Stosur moved into the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Melanie Oudin.

Jankovic through to French third round

Paris -- Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic was pushed to a third set before collecting a second-round victory Thursday at the French Open.

The tournament was hampered by rain through the day Thursday. The start of play was delayed 4 1/2 hours and several scheduled matches, including top-seeded Serena Williams' second rounder, were postponed to Friday.

Jankovic cruised through the first set in 28 minutes but then had to hold off Kaia Kanepi for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory. Jankovic had two breaks in the first and third sets while dropping serve just twice herself in the match.

Jankovic moves to Madrid quarters

Madrid -- Jelena Jankovic continued her recent strong play with a straight-set, third-round victory Thursday at the Madrid Open clay-court tennis tournament.

Jankovic, the tournament's No. 7 seed but who this week moved to fourth in the world rankings, improved to 19-4 in recent matches with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Anabel Medina Garrigues in just 68 minutes.

She piled up six breaks in seven Medina Garrigues' service games while winning 64 percent of the match's points.

Jankovic advances to the Madrid quarterfinals against Aravane Rezai, who defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-4 7-6 (10-8) in a tight match.

Jankovic tops S. Williams in Italian Open

Rome -- Jelena Jankovic completed a rare double defeat of both Williams sisters in advancing to the finals of the $2 million Italian Open clay-court tennis tournament.

One day after eliminating fourth-seeded Venus Williams, Jankovic ousted world No. 1 Serena Williams 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Friday's match took nearly three hours and Jankovic fended off a match point before putting the win away.

The match was tight with Jankovic winning 116 points to Williams' 113. There were 13 service breaks, including two by Jankovic in the third set when Williams was serving for the match.

Williams, playing in her first tournament since a long layoff because of a knee injury, went up 5-2 in the tiebreaker before Jankovic stormed back with five straight points.

Jankovic routs V. Williams in Rome

Rome -- Jelena Jankovic allowed Venus Williams just one game Thursday in a quarterfinal victory at the $2 million Italian Masters tennis tournament in Rome.

Jankovic, the tournament No. 7 seed, stunned the fourth-seeded Williams 6-0, 6-1 in 59 minutes. Jankovic piled up six breaks of Williams's serve and won 66 percent of the points in the match.

Her semifinal opponent will be world No. 1 Serena Williams, who is in her first tournament since winning the Australian Open. Serena Williams had been resting a sore knee but moved well in a 6-1, 6-4 win Thursday over Maria Kirilenko. Serena Williams had seven aces and dropped serve just once.

Jankovic downs Wozniacki for BNP crown

Indian Wells -- No. 6 seed Jelena Jankovic had little trouble Sunday downing second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the finals of the BNP Paribas Open tennis event.

The Serb posted a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win over her Danish opponent, raising her all-time record against Wozniacki to 4-0 while claiming her 11th career title and pocketing $700,000 in prize money at Indian Wells, Calif.

The title tilt took 1 hour, 24 minutes, and was Jankovic's first since winning in Cincinnati last year. She raised her all-time mark in finals to 12-10 with the victory.

Wozniacki fell to 6-7 all-time in finals.
