MLB: St. Louis 3, Washington 2

St. Louis, Aug. 29: Albert Pujols hit a lead-off homer in the ninth inning Friday to give St. Louis a 3-2 victory over Washington.

The Cardinals trailed by a run going into the eighth, but Khalil Greene hit a pinch-hit homer in the eighth to tie it, and Pujols blasted the third pitch from Jason Bergmann (2-4) in the ninth over the wall in left.

St. Louis stayed nine games in front of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, the largest division lead in the majors. The Cardinals have lost just twice in their last nine games.

John Smoltz, in his second start with the Cardinals, allowed a run on four hits over six innings.

MLB: Chicago Cubs 9, Washington 4

Chicago, Aug. 27: Koyie Hill and Derrek Lee had two-run doubles in a six-run eighth Wednesday that broke open a close game and gave the Chicago Cubs a 9-4 win over Washington.

The Cubs had only a 3-2 lead before sending 10 men to the plate in the eighth.

Chicago won for the third time in nine outings and stayed a distant nine games behind St. Louis for the lead in the National League Central.

Milton Bradley added a homer and drove in three runs for the Cubs, who piled up 13 hits.

Angel Guzman (3-3) got the win with an inning of work in relief of starter Rich Harden.

Washington lost for the seventh time in nine games and dropped its 82nd contest of the season.

MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Washington 3

St. Petersburgh, Fla. June 13: Ben Zobrist hit a three-run homer in a seven-run sixth inning Saturday when the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to beat Washington 8-3.

Tampa Bay trailed 2-0 after three, but a solo fourth-inning homer by Carlos Pena set off the seven-run outburst. Gabe Gross hit a two-run homer and Evan Longoria hit a two-run double in the big inning.

Reid Brignac had three hits, while Pena and Longoria had two hits apiece for the Rays, who will attempt to sweep the three-game series Sunday.

Winner Andy Sonnanstine (5-6) gave up three runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.
