Ducks' Wisniewski suspended for 8 games

New York -- Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended for eight games Thursday by the NHL for a "retaliatory hit to the head" of another player.

The league said the suspension will be without pay, which will cost him more than $268,000. Wisniewski won't be eligible to play for the Ducks until an April 3 game in Los Angeles.

Wisniewski hit Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook during the second period of a game Wednesday, sending the Blackhawks' player into the glass. Seabrook was briefly unconscious and didn't play the remainder of the game.

Wisniewski was given a minor penalty for charging by game officials.

But Thursday the NHL acted with the suspension.

Ducks' Wisniewski suspended for 2 games

Toronto -- Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski has been suspended for two games for delivering a forearm blow to the head of another player, the NHL said Monday.

Wisniewski hit Phoenix forward Shane Doan during a 3-2 Coyotes shootout win over the Ducks Oct. 31, league officials said.

No penalty was called on the play.

Wisniewski, who will forfeit $28,497.40 in pay because of the suspension, may return to the lineup for a Saturday game against Phoenix after missing games against Pittsburgh and Nashville.

The money will go to the Players Emergency Assistance Fund.

NHL: Minnesota 4, Anaheim 3 (OT)

Minneapolis, Oct. 7: A power-play goal by Andrew Brunette in overtime gave Minnesota a 4-3 victory over Anaheim in the Wild's home opener Tuesday.

Brunette knocked in a rebound of his own shot against Jean-Sebastian Giguere at 3:08 of the extra period to keep the Wild unbeaten in eight home openers at Xcel Energy Center.

The Wild had the man advantage after James Wisniewski was sent off for roughing.
Niklas Backstrom made 16 saves for Minnesota and Giguere had 28 in his first start of the season.

Minnesota scored three times in the third period to force overtime after the Ducks notched all three of their goals in the second period.
