Peavy's season over

Chicago -- Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy is out for the season after surgery Wednesday to repair muscle damage in his right shoulder.

The team said in a release the operation to fix a detached latissimus dorsi muscle in his right posterior shoulder "could not have gone any better."

"We were very pleased with the results and are hopeful that Jake will be ready by the start of spring training 2011," the statement said.

Peavy, who was the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner with San Diego, was 7-6 with a 4.63 earned run average in 17 starts this year.

Peavy's shoulder surgery 'successful'

Surgery to repair the muscle in Peavy's right posterior shoulder "could not have gone any better," a White Sox statement said.

"We were very pleased with the results and are hopeful that Jake will be ready by the start of Spring Training 2011," the team said.

Peavy, a former Cy Young Award winner, was 7-6 with a 4.63 earned run average in 17 starts during his first full season with the White Sox after coming to the team last season from the San Diego Padres.

White Sox put P Peavy on disabled list

Chicago -- The Chicago White Sox placed right-handed starting pitcher Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a detached shoulder muscle.

The team said Peavy injured the latissimus dorsi muscle in his right posterior shoulder area while pitching in the second inning of Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

Peavy, a former Cy Young Award winner and two-time All-Star, was 7-6 with a 4.63 earned run average in 17 starts this year, his first full season with Chicago after being signed as a free agent. He has recorded 93 strikeouts and 34 walks in 107 innings.

MLB: Chi. White Sox 8, Detroit 0

Detriot, Oct. 2 -- Jake Peavy allowed two hits over eight innings Friday and the Chicago White Sox slowed Detroit's bid for a division title by downing the Tigers 8-0.

The Tigers began the night's action with only a two-game lead over Minnesota in the chase for the American League Central championship and failed to put up a fight against a pitcher who had his second straight outstanding start.

In his final appearance of the season, Peavy (9-6) struck out five and walked two while throwing 105 pitches. He gave up a single to Placido Polanco in the first and a single to Alex Avila in the eighth.

Peavy threw seven scoreless innings Saturday against the Tigers. He has won seven of his last eight starts.

MLB: Chi. White Sox 2, Detroit 0

Chicago -- Jake Peavy struck out eight over seven innings Friday and combined with three relievers to bring the Chicago White Sox a 2-0 win over Detroit.

The loss by the Tigers, combined with a Minnesota victory over Kansas City, cut Detroit's lead over the Twins to two games in the American League Central.
The Tigers and Twins will play four times in Detroit beginning next Monday.

Chicago acquired Peavy (8-6) from San Diego in July in hopes he could ignite a late rush to the division title. Instead, the White Sox are one loss away from elimination from playoff contention.

MLB: San Diego 4, St. Louis 0

San Diego, Aug. 22: Clayton Richard threw six shutout innings and struck out six Friday in San Diego's 4-0 victory over St. Louis.

It marked the Padres' first win over the Cardinals in 11 tries.

St. Louis entered the contest having won 11 of its last 13 games. But Richard and four relievers cooled the Cards.

Richard (7-3) has gone 3-0 since he came to the Padres in the trade that sent former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.

Nick Hundley gave the Padres the lead with a three-run homer in the second and they added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Kyle Lohse (4-8), who pitched four innings, gave up the Hundley homer.

MLB: San Diego 8, New York Mets 3

San Diego, Aug. 7: Adrian Gonzalez helped San Diego build a seven-run lead with three RBI Thursday and the Padres coasted from there to an 8-3 victory over the New York Mets.

The Mets have not won a series in San Diego since 2002 and they got off to a bad start in this four-game set by surrendering a four-run third inning.

Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly in the first and hit a two-run homer in the third.

Clayton Richard (5-3) had a shutout working until running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in his second start with the Padres.

Richard came to San Diego from Chicago last week in the deal that sent Jake Peavy to the White Sox.

Jake Peavy out with ankle injury

Anahiem, Calif. -- San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will miss at least a month because of a tendon strain in his right ankle.

The oft-injured right hander has been bothered by ankle tendinitis since May 22, when he was hurt while running the bases during a 4-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The team said on its Web site the damage to the ankle was discovered during an MRI at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

He showed up at the clubhouse before Friday's 11-6 loss to the LA Angels in Anaheim wearing a cast.

"I thought I was good enough to be out there (before the MRI)," he told reporters. ""It was no fun to run and cover first base (in subsequent starts)."

MLB: San Diego 4, Chicago Cubs 0

San Diego -- Jake Peavy limited Chicago to two hits over six innings Friday and San Diego went on to blank the Cubs 4-0 for its seventh straight victory.

Peavy (4-5) made his first start since invoking a no-trade clause in his contract and rejecting a deal that would have sent him to the Chicago White Sox. He struck out 10 while handing the Cubs their fifth straight setback.

The Cubs managed only three hits through eight innings, but Heath Bell had to come in during the ninth after Chicago put two runners on with two out. Bell walked Kosuke Fukudome to bring the tying run to the plate in the person of Derrek Lee, but Bell got Lee on a foul pop-up to grab his 12th save.
