MLB: Toronto 3, Tampa Bay 2

Toronto, Aug. 26: Marco Scutaro scored the winning run on a wild pitch by J.P. Howell with two out in the ninth inning Wednesday, giving Toronto a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the ninth to pull out a win in a strange game in which three umpires worked behind home plate.

Jerry Crawford started the game at the plate, but was hit in the mask by a foul ball and left after the second inning. Tom Hallion moved from second base to call balls and strikes, but he was hit in the chest by a pitch thrown in the sixth inning by Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir.

Hallion slumped to the ground and remained there for several minutes before he was able to walk off the field.

MLB: Tampa Bay 5, Texas 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. Aug. 21: Ben Zobrist and Carlos Pena both homered in a three-run fifth inning Friday and Tampa Bay tightened the wild card race with a 5-3 win over Texas.

Scott Kazmir (8-7) took a shutout into the eighth inning before the Rangers made it close and the Rays went on to capture their sixth victory in seven games.

Tampa Bay already had a 2-0 lead going into the fifth, when Zobrist hit a two-run homer and Carlos Pena produced a solo shot, his 32nd of the season. Both long balls came off starter Dustin Nippert (4-2).

The Rays moved within three games of Boston for the lead in the American League wild card chase. Texas is one game behind the Red Sox.

MLB: Tampa Bay 5, Baltimore 4

St. Petersburgh, Fla. Aug. 18: B.J. Upton had a home run, a triple and two RBI Tuesday to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Gabe Gross added a two-run homer and Pat Burrell hit a solo home run for the Rays, who have won three straight games.

David Price (6-5) got the win after allowing two runs on seven hits. He has won four of his last six decisions and improved to 6-1 in eight home starts this season.

J.P. Howell got his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Matt Wieters had a two-run homer and Adam Jones and Nolan Reimold each drove in a run for Baltimore, which has lost four in a row.

Jason Berken (2-11) took the loss after giving up five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

MLB: Seattle 7, Tampa Bay 6

Seattle, Aug. 8: Ryan Langerhans hit a two-run homer with two out in the 11th inning Friday, rallying Seattle to a 7-6 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Mariners tied the game with a four-run seventh, but that comeback appeared to have been wasted when Tampa Bay scored in the top of the 11th on a one-out homer by Jason Bartlett.

J.P. Howell (6-3) came out for his second inning of work in the bottom of the 11th and walked Franklin Gutierrez. Jack Wilson sacrificed Gutierrez to second, and Rob Johnson flied out to center.

Langerhans, needing a hit to keep the game alive, did more than that by blasting a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right.

MLB: Tampa Bay 8, Kansas City 7

Kansas City, Mo. July 18: Evan Longoria capped a Tampa Bay rally with a two-run homer in the eighth Friday, lifting the Rays to an 8-7 decision over Kansas City.

The Royals took a 6-2 lead through three innings, but the Rays came back to win for the fifth time in seven games.

Tampa Bay got within one on Pat Burrell's two-run blast in the seventh and Longoria gave the Rays the lead in the eighth when he hit his 18th homer of the season.

Carl Crawford reached on a two-out single off Juan Cruz (3-3) and Longoria followed by hitting the first pitch from Cruz out to left.

That made a winner out of Joe Nelson (3-0), who worked the seventh inning. J.P. Howell earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth.

MLB: Tampa Bay 3, Florida 2

St. Petersburgh, Fla. June 27: Willy Aybar's one out, pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 inter-league victory over Florida.

In the game-winning rally, Jason Bartlett singled and, with Aybar at the plate, stole second. A wild pitch put Bartlett on third base and Aybar followed with a fly ball to center.

Carlos Pena hit a fourth-inning solo home run. B.J. Upton plated a run with a fifth-inning bunt single, while Bartlett had two of the seven hits for the Rays, who have won four straight and can complete a three-game sweep of the Marlins Sunday.

The winner was J.P. Howell (4-2), the last of five Rays' pitchers.
