Palo Alto, Calif. -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has taken a step toward granting Internet giant Facebook a trademark on the name "face."
The trademark agency did not give final approval to Facebook, but issued a Notice of Allowance, one step away from giving Facebook a corner on the market that has already had a few legal scuffles regarding its name, InformationWeek reported Wednesday.
Facebook bought its way into the debate by purchasing the trademark application for the word "face" from a British Web site, Faceparty.com.
Since then it has filed suit against Teachbook, a social Web site for educators, for use of the word "book."

Look out, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL)! Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) -- yes, that Dell -- is about to make a big splash in tablets. I'm not talking about the Streak, a tweener that's too big to be a smartphone, yet too small to be a serviceable tablet. Dell's real head turner may be its Inspiron Duo, which will reportedly begin shipping early next month -- just in time for the telltale holiday shopping season.
