Facebook tightens grip on word 'face'

Palo Alto, Calif. -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has taken a step toward granting Internet giant Facebook a trademark on the name "face."

The trademark agency did not give final approval to Facebook, but issued a Notice of Allowance, one step away from giving Facebook a corner on the market that has already had a few legal scuffles regarding its name, InformationWeek reported Wednesday.

Facebook bought its way into the debate by purchasing the trademark application for the word "face" from a British Web site,

Since then it has filed suit against Teachbook, a social Web site for educators, for use of the word "book."
