Port of San Diego in economic storm

San Diego -- Industry observers said a new $28 million passenger terminal at the Port of San Diego would have to ride through tough times before the investment breaks even.

Concurrent with completion of the building with the jagged roof line that has received a local "Onion award" from the San Diego Architectural Foundation -- basically, a thumbs down -- the cruise line business is expected to draw half as many passengers in 2011 as it did in 2010 due to the economic downturn and violence in Mexico, The San Diego Union Tribune reported Saturday.

Air travel and fares head up for holiday

New York -- Pent up demand is apt to increase travel on U.S. airlines for the Thanksgiving holiday, industry analysts said.

"Many who stayed home for the holidays last year are hopping on a plane this year," said FareCompare.com Chief Executive Officer Rick Seaney, The Dallas Morning Star reported Tuesday.

The Air Transport Association also predicted an increase in fliers for the holiday. The trade group said 3.5 percent more passengers will fly this year compared to a year ago for a total of 24 million.

The ATA counts a 12-day period, Nov. 19 through Nov. 30, as Thanksgiving travel.

As the number of passengers recovers from a prolonged, recessionary slump, however, fare prices are also headed higher.

Manufacturing turns higher in euro zone

Brussels -- Manufacturing activity in the 16-nation euro zone grew for the first time in three months in October, industry researchers at Markit said Tuesday.

The Purchasing Managers Index for the region climbed from 53.7 to 54.6, after hitting an eight-month low in September, Markit said.

Greece was the only euro zone member to see a contraction in the month with new orders dropping and manufacturing employment in decline. "Greek manufacturing production fell at the fast pace since June," the report said.

Spain and Ireland saw their PMI readings hit 50, the break even point between growth and contraction.
