U.S. markets rise after sell-off

Wall Street investors are also reacting to Tuesday's sell-off. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 178.47 points, or 1.59 percent Tuesday.
The Standard & Poor's 500 lost 19.41 points, or 1.62 percent.

In midmorning trading Wednesday, the DJIA added 9.96 points, 0.09 percent, to 11,033.46. The S&P 500 gained 4.57 points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,182.91. The Nasdaq composite index tacked on 13.80 points, or 0.56 percent, to 2,483.64.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 7/32 to yield 2.816 percent.

Consumer optimism higher in IBD/TIPP poll

Los Angeles -- The three-part IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index rose 0.3 points in November, Investor's Business Daily said.

The monthly index compiled from a survey of a minimum of 900 randomly selected adult consumers taken in the first week of each month rose from 46.4 to 46.7 in November and now stands 0.2 points above its 12-month average of 46.5, IBD reported Tuesday.

The headline IBD/TIPP index is a composite of three component questions, including a forecast of the economy six months down the road, a six-month forecast of personal finances and a measure of confidence in federal economic policies.

U.S. markets move higher Monday

New York -- U.S. markets rose to start the week Monday and gains were made in Asia and Europe.

Equities have defied dour predictions made in August when they were on a downswing.

At close Monday, on a day with no major government reports on the economy, the Dow Jones industrial average added 81.36 points, 0.78 percent, to 10,544.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 12.35, 1.11 percent, to 1,121.90. The Nasdaq composite index added 43.23, 1.93 percent, to 2,285.71.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,297 stocks advanced and 725 declined on a volume of 3.1 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note gained 13/32 to yield 2.75 percent.

New York -- U.S. markets rose to start the week Monday and gains were made in Asia and Europe.

In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average added 53.81 points, 0.51 percent, to 10,516.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.86 percent, 9.55, to 1,119.10. The Nasdaq composite index added 1.52 percent, 34.05, to 2,276.54.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note gained 10/32 to yield 2.759 percent.

The euro rose to $1.2877 compared to Friday's $1.2711. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 83.56 yen from Friday's 84.20 yen.

Mortgage activity rises as rates decline

Washington -- The Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday that U.S. mortgage activity increased in the week ending Aug. 20, as interest rates continued to decline.

The MBA's Market Composite Index rose 4.9 percent in the week, while the Refinancing Index rose 5.7 percent, the trade group said.

During the week, the average interest rate for 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages declined from 4.6 percent to 4.55 percent with points falling from 0.92 to 0.89.

Rates for the average 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages fell from 3.99 percent to 3.91 percent, with points for 15-year contracts rising from 1.05 to 1.64.
