Ilya Kovalchuk

NHL: New Jersey 2, Calgary 1 (SO)

Newark, N.J. -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored the only goal of a shootout Wednesday, giving New Jersey a 2-1 win over Calgary.

Kovalchuk delivered his goal in the first round and Johan Hedberg was perfect for the Devils in the shootout after stopping 25 shots in regulation and overtime.

New Jersey won its second straight on the heels of a three-game losing streak. Calgary has lost three in a row and six of its last seven.

David Clarkson scored for the Devils in the first period and it remained a 1-0 game until Rene Bourque produced his 10th goal of the season 1:18 into the third.

Calgary's Henrik Karlsson took part in the first shootout of his career after making 20 saves over the first 65 minutes.

NHL: New Jersey 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)

Newark, N.J. -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored 3:27 into overtime Friday to give the New Jersey Devils their first home victory of the season, a 4-3 triumph over Edmonton.

It was Kovalchuk's first goal in eight games and fourth of the season.

The winning score came on the power play off a feed from Henrik Tallinder.

Kovalchuk sent a one-timer past Devan Dubnyk.

Edmonton had a 3-1 lead late in the second period but Brian Rolston scored his first goal of the season with 3:08 to go in the second and Mattias Tedenby deadlocked the game on the power play with 9 minutes left in regulation.

New Jersey had lost its first seven home contests, two of the setbacks coming in overtime.

NHL: New Jersey 1, Buffalo 0 (OT)

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored his first goal of the season 53 seconds into overtime Wednesday, giving the New Jersey Devils a 1-0 victory over Buffalo.

It was the first win in four tries this season for the Devils, who avoided what would have been their worst start to a season in nine years.

Martin Brodeur extended his NHL career record shutout total to 111 by making 27 saves.

Kovalchuk came to the Devils in a mid-season trade with Atlanta last year and signed a $15-year, $100 million contract prior to the start of the 2010-11 campaign.

He had two assists in New Jersey's season-opening loss to Dallas, but had not produced a point since then until he bested Ryan Miller with New Jersey's 38th shot of the game.

Arbitrator: Kovalchuk deal is void

Newark, N.J. -- Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils is void, an arbitrator ruled Monday.

Arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled against a grievance filed by the NHL Players Association, which sought to block the league's ruling that Kovalchuk's contract is illegal on the grounds it circumvented the salary cap.

The players' union argued it did indeed conform to the current collective bargaining agreement.

Bloch's decision means the high-scoring Russian superstar is again an unrestricted free agent. The Devils have said they and Kovalchuk's agent will tinker with the terms of the deal and resubmit it to the NHL.

NHLPA supports Kovalchuk

Toronto -- The NHL Players' Association Monday filed a grievance on behalf of Russian star Ilya Kovalchuk after the league rejected his $102 million deal with New Jersey.

"Under the terms of the CBA (collective bargaining agreement), the NHLPA and Mr. Kovalchuk are entitled to an expedited resolution of this matter," the NHLPA said in a statement. "The NHLPA will have no further comment until this matter has been resolved by an arbitrator."

The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported the league turned down the 17-year contract last week, contending it circumvented the NHL's salary cap.

Thrashers' Kovalchuk out for four weeks

Atlanta -- Atlanta forward Ilya Kovalchuk, who broke a bone in his right foot during a weekend game, will be sidelined for four weeks, the Thrashers announced Monday.

Kovalchuk was struck in the foot by a puck Saturday during the first period of a 4-3 Atlanta loss to San Jose.

The 26-year-old player from Russia is expected to miss 12 to 14 games.

Kovalchuk has averaged 41 goals a season the past five years in the NHL. He has nine goals so far this season.
