Moscow -- Igor Kunitsyn and Mikhail Youzhny took singles victories Friday, putting Russia ahead 2-0 in its best-of-five, first-round Davis Cup series against India.
Kunitsyn claimed a 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Somdev Devvarman that took more the 3 1/2 hours. Youzhny followed with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 romp over Rohan Bopanna.
Kunitsyn overcame 65 unforced errors and four service breaks in winning.
Youzhny committed just 13 unforced errors and didn't serve in his match. He broke Bopanna's serve five times.
Russia can lock up a Davis Cup quarterfinals slot Saturday in the doubles match. Kunitsyn is to team with Teimuraz Gasbashvili versus the Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Valencia, Spain -- Two favorites, top-seeded Andy Murray and reigning champion David Ferrer, advanced in Tuesday's opening round of the Valencia Open in Spain.
Murray, the runner-up in September's U.S. Open, dispatched Spanish wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1, taking only an hour to finish the match. He broke Gimeno-Traver's serve five times in eight tries.
The fourth-ranked Murray didn't appear to be rusty after recovering from an injury to his left wrist and playing for the first time since dropping a fourth-round match at the U.S. Open. He'll next face Argentine Leonardo Mayer.

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Top-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-2 Wednesday in a first-round match at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia.
The 2004 St. Petersburg champion, also last week's winner at Moscow's Kremlin Cup, was joined in Wednesday's winner's circle by retiring compatriot Marat Safin, a two-time St. Petersburg champion; No. 2 Victor Hanescu of Romania, a 6-3 6-4 second-round winner over Ukraine's Illya Marchenko; Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, who downed No. 4 seed Jeremy Chardy of France 7-6 (9-7), 6-3; No. 8 Horacio Zeballos of Argentina, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Ukraine's Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr.; and Russian Igor Kunitsyn, who topped seventh-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-4, 6-3.

Shanghai -- Igor Kunitsyn, Feliciano Lopez, Shao-Xuan Zeng and Andreas Beck were first-round winners Sunday in the Shanghai ATP Masters.
Kunitsyn came from behind to down fellow Russian Igor Andreev
6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2.
Lopez beat fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4.
Zeng, of China, rallied to overcome Dudi Sela of Israel 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Beck, of Germany, advanced after his opponent, Jose Acasuso, quit in the second set with a left knee injury.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Serbian Novak Djokovic are the 1-2 seeds in the tournament.

Washington, Aug. 5: Top-seeded Andy Roddick coasted into the third round of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Benjamin Becker.
Roddick, gearing up for next month's U.S. Open, will next meet Sam Querrey, who is coming off his triumph last week in Los Angeles.
Querrey advanced past the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Igor Kunitsyn.
No. 4 seed Fernando Gonzalez reached the third round by surviving against qualifier Alejandro Falla 7-5, 7-5. His third-round opponent will be Wayne Odesnik, who dropped Igor Andreev 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Juan Carlos Ferrero, runner-up last week in a tournament in Croatia, ousted Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2 to set up a meeting with Tommy Haas.

Indianapolis, July 23: Rain wiped out the entire day's play Wednesday at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.
The action will resume Thursday with one first-round match still to be played -- that being between Taylor Dent and Marcos Daniel. The winner of that match will face top-seeded Dmitry Tursumov in the second round.
Among other matches pushed back to Thursday was the second-round confrontation between second-seeded Dudi Sela and qualifier Alex Bogomolov.
No. 3 seed Sam Querrey will take on Rajeev Ram and fourth-seeded Igor Kunitsyn will meet Wayne Odesnik.

Indianapolis, July 22: Top-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia advanced in Tuesday's first round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, subduing German Michael Berrer in three sets.
Tursunov, who won the tournament in 2007 and was runner-up last year, moved on by defeating Berrer 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 and will face the winner of Wednesday's match between American Taylor Dent and Marcos Daniel of Brazil.
Tursonov, who lost at Wimbledon in the first round, admitted to being rusty in his first match in about three weeks, but Berrer helped out with 16 double-faults.
Also advancing Tuesday was No. 2 seed Dudi Sela. The Israeli knocked off American Vince Spadea 7-5, 6-1.
The fourth seed, Russian Igor Kunitsyn, and fifth seed, German Benjamin Becker, also advanced.

Tel Aviv, Israel. -- Israel, which had already clinched a berth in the Davis Cup semifinals, finished its matches with Russia Sunday, posting a final score of 4-1.
Harel Levy got the final point, beating Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) at Tel Aviv, Israel.
The Israelis had already built an unbeatable 3-1 advantage Saturday in the best-of-five matches.
Israel goes to the cup semifinals for the first time, playing either Spain or Germany in September.
