New York -- A pair of New York college students said their upcoming "Dreidelpalooza" event is aimed at setting a Guinness World Record.
Yeshiva University juniors Jason Katz and Fiona Guedalia said they hope at least 540 people will join them Tuesday to break the world record of 541 simultaneously spinning dreidels -- four-sided tops associated with Hanukkah, the New York Daily News reported Monday.
"People are really excited. They think it's cool," Katz said. "It's something everybody who's involved can tell their kids, tell their grandkids -- I was part of a world record."
The juniors said the event will raise funds for the campus organization Students Helping Students.

New York -- The Guinness World Record holders for the largest and smallest dogs in the world met for the first time in New York's Central Park.
The dogs, a 3-inch-tall, 2-pound Chihuahua named Boo Boo and a 43-inch-tall, 245-pound Great Dane named Giant George, had a cordial first meeting Wednesday in the park, their owners told the New York Daily News.
"I thought he might want a snack or something, but he was very gentle," Lana Elswick, Boo Boo's owner, said of Giant George. "Boo Boo was fascinated. She waited a few minutes and then she went over."
Elswick, of Kentucky, said Boo Boo weighed only 1 ounce when she was born and eats only one tablespoon of dog food per day.

Groveland, Fla. -- A Florida man running for mayor of his town is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for longest scuba dive by spending seven days underwater.
Allen Sherrod, who served as a Groveland City Councilman from 2004 to 2009, began his attempt Sunday and has spent the ensuing days 10 feet below the surface of Lake David, WOFL-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday.
"He's doing well. At times the cold has some impact until we get some warm fluids in him. With your body temp at 98 and water temperature at 86 that difference does take a toll on the body after awhile," safety diver Larry Berry said.

Dallas -- An attempt in Texas to set a Guinness world record for the largest group of dancing cheerleaders came up short, event organizers said.
Those putting on the Saturday event, including a television network launching a series about cheerleaders, hoped to break the existing record of 297 set at a cheerleading competition in Tennessee last year, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Organizers contacted thousands of middle schools, high schools and cheerleading clubs and posted a YouTube video so participants could practice beforehand, the newspaper said.
But when the time came to dance their way into the records books, only about 100 cheer enthusiasts had gathered at Frisco Memorial Stadium north of Dallas.

Detorit -- A Michigan restaurant owner says going for a Guinness world record for the largest commercially available hamburger was a matter of patriotism.
Steve Mallie, owner of Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar in Southgate, Mich., said he decided to attempt a record burger when he read the current mark for the world's largest was held by Thailand, The Detroit News reported Sunday.
"I said, 'Wait a minute. Hamburgers are American. Why should the record be in Thailand?' So I decided to try to break the record myself," Mallie explained.
His Guinness certificate reads: "The largest commercially available hamburger is 185.8 lbs and is available for U.S. $499 on the menu at Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar USA in Southgate, Michigan, USA."

Detroit -- An effort in Michigan to claim a Guinness World Record for holding the largest card-playing tournament has fallen short of the mark, organizers said.
The Wayne Rotary Foundation in Livonia, Mich., held a euchre tournament Saturday that attracted 589 entrants, only about half the number needed to snag the record, The Detroit News reported.
"We fell short," rotary President Robert Gilbert told the gathered players, "but you're going to have a good time. I really thought we could do it."
The record was set in 2008 in Mostoles, Spain, where 1,024 people played a card game called Mus, the Detroit Free Press said.
Euchre is a trick-taking card game most commonly played with four people in two partnerships.

Salt Lake City -- A Salt Lake City woman who held the Guinness World Record for longest fingernails on a female hand said she cried when they were broken off in a car crash.
Lee Redmond, 68, said her nails, which she hadn't cut since 1979, measured a total 28 feet, 4 inches before they broke off when she was thrown from her car during a February crash, KSL Radio, Salt Lake City, reported Wednesday.
"The first thing I spotted was a fingernail, and I thought,' Ohh.' Then I started to cry and said, 'There's one of my fingernails.' A sweet lady picked them up and I told her they were a Guinness world record, so she went around and gathered fragments of fingernails," Redmond said.
