Garcia-Lopez takes Thailand Open title

Bangkok -- Guillermo Garcia-Lopez claimed his second ATP title with a three-set victory Sunday over Jarkko Nieminen at the Thailand Open tennis tournament.

Garcia-Lopez advanced to the championship match with a three-set win over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals capping a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win by finishing off his fourth match point opportunity.

The final game had Nieminen serving but Garcia-Lopez had the advantage for much of the 16-point game. Garcia-Lopez got to his fourth match point with a well-executed drop shot and finished off the win with a forehand winner that dropped Nieminen to 1-9 in ATP championship matches.

It was the second career tournament win for Garcia-Lopez, whose other title was in May 2009 in Austria.

Garcia-Lopez wins lengthy quarterfinal

Eastbourne, England -- Guillermo Garcia-Lopez won a third-set tie-breaker Thursday in claiming a berth in the semifinals of the Aegon International grass-court tournament in England.

The fifth-seeded Garcia-Lopez battled No. 4-seeded Julien Benneteau for nearly 2 1/2 hours before taking the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Garcia-Lopez served for the match at 5-3 of the third set but Benneteau got his fourth service break of the day and they held serve until the tie-breaker. Garcia-Lopez took the first two points and then built a 5-1 lead before finishing off the match.

Garcia-Lopez roars through 2nd-round win

Eastbourne, England -- No. 5-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was on the court less than an hour Tuesday in a second-round victory at the Aegon International tournament in England.

Garcia-Lopez lost only seven points on serve -- most during the one break he suffered -- in beating Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 in 53 minutes. Garcia-Lopez won 66 percent of the points in the match, including 81 percent when serving.

He broke Fognini's serve five times in eight games and lost one point on serve in the second set.

Illya Marchenko upended sixth-seeded Horacio Zeballos 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the day's other second-round match.

Garcia-Lopez advances in straight sets

Estoril, Portugal -- Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez posted a solid second-round victory Thursday at the $580,000 Estoril Open clay-court tennis tournament.

Garcia-Lopez ousted Leonardo Tavares 6-2, 6-2 without facing a break point in collecting a quarterfinals berth in the tournament. In addition to winning 77 percent of the points on serve, Garcia-Lopez took more points (36-34) then Tavares when Tavares served.

He'll go against Alberto Martin in Friday's quarterfinals. Martin handled last-minute fill-in David Marrero 6-1, 6-4 in 67 minutes also without having to defend a break-point situation. Marrero was called on to replace fourth-seeded Gael Monfils, who withdrew because of a food-related illness.

Monfils wins at Vienna tennis event

Vienna -- Third-seeded Gael Monfils beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a straight sets first-round match Wednesday at the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy at Vienna.

Monfils, the tournament's 2008 runner-up, defeated his Spanish foe 7-5, 6-4, winning 79 percent of service points and hitting seven aces.

If Monfils, a Paris native, wins the Vienna event, he will earn 160 points in his effort to qualify for the season-ending men's singles final at London next month.

Soderling moves into Stockholm semifinals

Stockholm, Sweden -- Top-seeded Robin Soderling advanced to the Stockholm Open tennis tournament semifinals by winning in straight sets over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The native Swede, the only seeded player remaining, thrilled a partisan crowd with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory against his Spanish foe.

The 2008 Stockholm runner-up secured the match with three key service breaks, and at No. 10, entered the Top 10 for the first time in the latest world rankings this week.

Gruel upsets Becker in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden, Oct. 19: Simon Gruel, ranked 59th in the world and without a finals appearance all year, surprised Benjamin Becker Monday on the first day of the Stockholm Open.

Gruel defeated the sixth-seeded Becker 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to set up a second-round meeting with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Garcia-Lopez took out Alberto Martin 6-3, 6-2.

No. 4 seed Juan Monaco survived an upset bid with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 decision over Jan Hernych. In other first-round action, Joachim Johansson served 21 aces to defeat Peter Luczak 7-5, 6-2 and Leonardo Mayer ousted Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-3.

Garcia-Lopez wins Austrian Open

Kitzbuhel, Austria. -- Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez rallied Saturday and beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau in the final of the Austrian Open in Kitzbuhel.

Garcia-Lopez downed Benneteau 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in the first title match of his career.

The French Open tuneup victory was worth $100,000 to Garcia-Lopez.

"I think it's the best moment in my career," he said. "I played in my first final and I won. It's an unbelievable feeling and so happy to win my first title. Once I won the second set tie-break I thought I had a very good chance to win the match. There was only one set left and I thought I had to fight and fight until the end."
