'Michigan Meatout Day' draws scorn

Lansing, Mich. -- Meat producers and hunters in Michigan are slamming Gov. Jennifer Granholm's proclamation declaring Saturday "Michigan Meatout Day."

The Michigan Farm Bureau said Granholm's official proclamation declaring a day of meatless eating is "unconscionable and insensitive to livestock and dairy farmers," the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

"It's inconceivable to us that the governor could stoop to this level of telling people what they should and shouldn't eat based on the philosophies of 'food elitists,'" said Wayne Wood, president of the farm bureau.

Michigan winning some job tug-o-wars

Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm is finding some success tempting Massachusetts companies to relocate in the Great Lake State, officials said.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick tipped his hat to the rival governor saying Granholm "busted my chops," by luring battery company A123 to Michigan, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

In addition, using tax breaks combined with federal help, Michigan has persuaded alternative fuel producer Mascoma to build a $200 million factory in Kinross, Mich. Massachusetts solar panel maker Evergreen Solar also choose Michigan for a new factory, the newspaper said.

GE plans Detroit research center

Detroit -- Sources close to General Electric Corp. said the company planned to open a clean energy research center in Detroit that would create 1,200 jobs.

While not specifying what it would be, a company spokesman said GE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt would include "some news" in a speech scheduled for the Detroit Economic Club Friday, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd declined to comment Wednesday.
A source, however, said GE would create the research and development center in Wayne County, Mich., which includes Detroit.
