Goldikova Three-peat in BC Mile

Louisville, Ky. -- Goldikova won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile for a record third straight time Saturday, running by the leaders late.

Gio Ponti, who passed up a chance to challenge Zenyatta in the $5 million Classic, finished second, 1 3/4 lengths in arrears, with a late rush behind the winner. The Usual Q.T. was a longshot third and Paco Boy, another European invader, finished fourth.

Goldikova, a 5-year-old Anabaa mare bred in Ireland, looked like she might be in trouble down the backstretch after breaking from the No. 10 post position and being carried wide around the first turn.

Arcadia, Calif. -- Goldikova overcame the outside post position and traffic trouble to win her second consecutive running of the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup mile Saturday.

Courageous Cat was second, a half-length back, and Justenuffhumor finished third, a head in front of Court Vision.

Goldikova, a 4-year-old, Irish-bred daughter of Anabaa, ran the 1 mile on firm turf in 1:32.26 with Oliver Peslier riding for trainer Freddie Head.

Drawn in the outside, No. 11 stall, Goldikova was forced wide during the first run down the stretch and settled near the rear of the field down the backstretch. When asked to run, she advanced between horses, wove through some traffic and was just up in time to catch Courageous Cat in the final yards.
