Glendale, Ariz. -- Shane Doan scored two first-period goals Saturday, lifting the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-2 win over Dallas.

After Ray Whitney had given Phoenix a quick 1-0 lead 6 minutes into the game, Eric Belander intercepted a Dallas pass at center ice and found Doan streaking down the left side. The Phoenix captain then unleashed a wrist shot to make it 2-0.

Doan scored again with 13 seconds left in the frame on a power play for a three-goal advantage.

Keith Yandle added a goal and a pair of assists, Lauri Korpikoski also scored and Ilya Bryzgalov made 33 saves in the victory.

Kris Versteeg added an empty-netter and Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 22 shots for Toronto, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

He beat Lundqvist again less than 4 minutes later, catching him with a backhander as he was leaving the ice for an extra attacker.

Ford turns blue jeans into sound-proofing

Dearborn, Mich. -- U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. said it was reaching into the clothing discard pile for sound-proofing material for the Ford Focus.

"One of our key goals is to use more recycled or renewable materials without compromising performance or durability. Recycled content is a way to divert waste from landfills and reduce the impact of mining virgin material," said Ford's product sustainability manager Carrie Majeske in a statement.

Ford has tried using recycled materials, turning to soy foam for seat cushions and recycled resin for underbody systems. The automaker has also used recycled yarn for seat covers.

NHL: Calgary 4, Colorado 2

Denver -- Two goals by Curtis Glencross helped carry the Calgary Flames to a 4-2 road win over the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday.

David Moss scored the game-winner late in the third period and also had an assist in the win, which ended a four-game winless streak for the Flames.

Moss knocked in a rebound off a shot by Niklas Hagman at 15:45 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie at Pepsi Center. Glencross scored an empty net insurance goal at 19:26.

Ottawa -- The Ottawa Senators put in five straight goals Tuesday, including two by Jason Spezza, in their 5-2 victory over Atlanta.

The Senators spotted the Thrashers a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but they then reeled off five consecutive goals, bookended by Spezza's third goal of the season midway through the initial frame and his fourth 1:23 into the third.

Spezza added an assist and Sergei Gonchar, Chris Neil and Jesse Winchester also found the net for Ottawa, which won its fourth straight and seventh in nine games.

NHL GMs dismiss coach challenge option

Toronto -- NHL general managers have rejected the idea of instituting a coach's challenge option on disputed goals, Florida GM Dale Tallon said Tuesday.

Tallon had suggested the league institute a procedure similar to the NFL in which coaches are allowed to issue one challenge per game to dispute officials' rulings on questionable goals.

The issue seemed to pick up steam following an Oct. 26 incident in which a goal by Toronto's Colton Orr was allowed to stand despite replays showing he interfered with Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen before the puck crossed the goal line, NHL.com reported.

COL FB: Clemson 14, North Carolina St. 13

Clemson, S.C. -- Clemson upended 25th-ranked North Carolina State 14-13 Saturday on a late touchdown run by Jamie Harper.

Harper, who finished the game with 60 yards on 25 carries, broke through from 4 yards out to rally the Tigers (5-4, 3-3 ACC) with 6:18 to play.

Clemson frustrated the Wolfpack on their final two possessions of the game and won for the third time in their last four starts. North Carolina State has lost two of their last three.

Tigers quarterback Kyle Parker finished 20-of-29 for 214 yards, a touchdown and an interception. DeAndre Hopkins added 80 yards on five catches.

Thrashers send Nigel Dawes to AHL

The Thrashers said Dawes was assigned to the Chicago Wolves, Atlanta's affiliate in the American Hockey League.

The 25-year-old Dawes scored the game-winning goal in a 5-4 Atlanta shootout win over Anaheim a week ago, but he did not have a point in regulation time during six games this season.

Dawes, who has also been with the New York Rangers, Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames, has 39 goals and 44 assists in 205 NHL games.

Auto dealer chair rejects 60 mpg goal

Detroit -- The chairman of a national U.S. auto dealers association said the Obama administration's new fuel standards goals were too ambitious.

Speaking to an Automotive Press Association audience at the MGM Grand in Detroit, National Automobile Dealers Chairman Ed Tonkin said, "We would all like to believe consumers would be willing to pay whatever it takes to reach such a worthy goal.
But will they? Or is this another example of getting ahead of the consumer?"

The Obama administration is studying a proposal to have auto maker fleets reach an average fuel efficiency rating of 60 miles per gallon by 2025. The current goal for the industry is to obtain an average of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.
