MLB: New York Mets 9, Atlanta 4

New York, Aug. 18: Gary Sheffield and Luis Castillo each had three hits and two RBI Tuesday and the New York Mets had eight runs in the fourth inning of a 9-4 win over Atlanta.

Jeff Francoeur was 3-for-5 including an RBI double in the fourth, when New York tied a season-high for runs in an inning.

New York's Oliver Perez (3-3) gave up four runs on five hits in five innings. It was his first victory in his last seven starts.

Braves' starter Derek Lowe (12-8) came in sporting a 5-0 record in his last seven starts but gave up eight runs and 11 hits in just 3 2/3 innings.

Matt Diaz hit a three-run homer and Adam LaRoche a solo homer for the Braves.

MLB: San Francisco 10, New York Mets 1

New York, Aug. 17: Aaron Rowand was 4-for-5 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored Monday to pace the San Francisco to a 10-1 win over the New York Mets.

Randy Winn had three hits and scored twice and Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run double for the Giants.

Winning pitcher Joe Martinez (3-1) allowed just one run on five hits with two walks over five innings.

Gary Sheffield drove in the lone run and Cory Sullivan had two hits and scored for the Mets.

Livan Hernandez (7-8) took the loss after giving up six runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

MLB: New York Mets 9, Cincinnati 7

Flushing, N.Y. -- Gary Sheffield drove in three runs, and Brian Schneider and Fernando Tatis hit solo homers Sunday in the New York Mets' 9-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

The home runs were the first in eight games for the Mets, who took the last two contests in a three-game series.

Daniel Murphy added two RBI for the Mets.

Mike Pelfrey (7-4) was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings.

Brandon Phillips drove in two runs, and Willie Taveras, Chris Dickerson, Ramon
Hernandez and Adam Rosales each had an RBI for the Reds.

Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang (5-9) took the loss, giving up five runs and eight hits in three innings.

New York -- Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer for the second straight game Tuesday to lead the New York Mets to a 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals.

Livan Hernandez (4-1) allowed one run on nine hits with six strikeouts in the first complete game of the season for New York, which has won four of it last five. It was Hernandez's 46th complete game of his career.

Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with a home run and had the 1,000th hit of his career. Josh Willingham and Cristian Guzman also had two hits for the Nationals, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games.

Craig Stammen (0-1) lasted five innings in his second major league appearance. He gave up three runs on seven hits.

MLB: N.Y. Mets 5, Washington 2

New York -- Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer Monday to power the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.

John Maine (4-3) gave up one run on four hits and three walks in six innings for the Mets. Francisco Rodriguez, who suffered from back spasms during the weekend, had the tying run at the plate in the ninth but escaped with his 13th save of the season.

Carlos Beltran was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for New York.

Losing pitcher John Lannan (2-4) gave up five runs on eight hits and four walks while working into the sixth inning. Wil Nieves had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals.

Tigers release Gary Sheffield

Lakrland, Fla -- Outfielder Gary Sheffield, a nine-time All-Star who has 499 career home runs, was released Tuesday by the Detroit Tigers.

Sheffield, 41, told MLB.com that team officials, including Manager Jim Leyland, said they wanted a more versatile roster and could only see a designated-hitter role for Sheffield.
The Tigers will owe Sheffield $14 million for this season. The outfielder will be eligible to sign with any other team once he clears waivers.
