Bettman wants second 'Outdoor Classic'

Pebble Beach, Calif. -- Commissioner Gary Bettman says he wants the NHL to hold two contests outside next season.

He made the comment Wednesday at the conclusion of the Board of Governors meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif.

"There's been a lot of speculation," Bettman said.

This season's "Outdoor Classic" is Jan. 1 between the Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Boston's Fenway Park. It will be nationally televised in the United States by NBC Sports.

The Calgary Flames had expressed an interest in a second "Outdoor Classic," this season but talks broke down when talks were held in the summer.

NHL approves sale of Coyotes

Chicago, July 29: The NHL has blocked an attempt to move the Phoenix Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario, instead approving a sale to a U.S. group, the league announced Wednesday.

Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league's board of governors had turned down a bid from billionaire Jim Balsillie to buy the team. Balsillie had said he wanted to end the franchise's 13-year stay in Phoenix and return it to Canada.

Instead, the board approved the sale of the financially troubled Coyotes to a group headed by Jerry Reinsdorf, who owns the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox.

Current Phoenix owner Jerry Moyes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in May.

NHL Winter Classic heads to Boston

Boston -- The Boston Bruins will face the Philadelphia Flyers next season in the NHL's Winter Classic Jan. 1, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced.

The New Years Day contest between the Eastern Conference rivals will be played on the infield at Fenway Park, the home field of baseball's Boston Red Sox since 1912.

"A unique event deserves a unique venue, and we are delighted the Bruins and Flyers will renew their rivalry with the 'Green Monster' providing the backdrop," Bettman said at news conference. "We welcome our fans, our teams, our sponsors and the great city of Boston to this annual celebration of our sport. In a very short time, the Winter Classic has become a hallmark of the NHL season."
