Paris -- Gael Monfils ousted top-seeded Roger Federer Saturday, advancing to face Robin Soderling for the BNP Paribas Masters title in Paris.
The 12th-seeded Frenchman struggled mightily to dispose of the Swiss superstar, eventually notching an exhausting 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4) victory -- his first in six career matches against Federer.
With the hard-fought win, Monfils made the Paris finals for the second straight year. He went down to Novak Djokovic in the title match a year ago.
Soderling, meanwhile, saved three match points to rally and defeat French favorite Michael Llodra 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the other semifinal.

Montpellier, France -- Gael Monfils of France and Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic gained the finals of the Sud de France Open Saturday, each defeating semifinals opponents.
Monfils, the No. 3 seed, posted a 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-4 triumph over fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, while Ljubicic prevailed over Spain's Albert Montanes in a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision.
Monfils, 24, advanced to his third final of 2010 after producing the only break of the third set, beating his countryman for the first time in three meetings. Second-seeded Tsonga had downed Monfils in semifinals at Bangkok in 2008 and Tokyo last year.
Ljubicic, meanwhile, ripped off 18 aces during his 77-minute match and won 91 percent of the points on his first serve.

Tokyo -- Rafael Nadal collected his seventh ATP title of the year with a straight-set victory Sunday over Gael Monfils in the finals of the Japan Open tennis tournament.
Nadal, who is assured of being the No. 1-ranked player through the end of the year, improved to 66-8 in 2010 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over the fifth-seeded Monfils.
Nadal didn't face a break point and dropped just 11 points -- only four in the first set -- in his 10 service games.
Monfils landed 85 percent of his first serves and had nine aces in winning 62 percent of points on serve. But he had little answer for Nadal's serve and was unable to counter the three service breaks he suffered as Nadal won more than 90 percent of the points when his first serve was in.

Clermont-Ferrnad, France -- Wins Friday by Gael Monfils and Michael Llodra put France on the verge of eliminating two-time defending champion Spain from this year's Davis Cup tournament.
Monfils battled to a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 victory over David Ferrer and Llodra followed with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Fernando Verdasco for a 2-0 French lead in the best-of-five quarterfinal.
A French win in Saturday's doubles -- in which the French will send Julien Benneteau and Llodra against the Spanish duo of Feliciano Lopez and Verdasco -- or if Monfils or Llodra win one of the reverse singles matches Sunday would put France into the Davis Cup semifinals.
It would also knock out the Spanish, who have won the Davis Cup in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009.

On the court Monday, seventh-seeded Igor Andreev was defeated, losing 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to Leonardo Mayer in the day's only match involving a seeded player.
