Kunitsyn, Lopez advance in Shanghai

Shanghai -- Igor Kunitsyn, Feliciano Lopez, Shao-Xuan Zeng and Andreas Beck were first-round winners Sunday in the Shanghai ATP Masters.

Kunitsyn came from behind to down fellow Russian Igor Andreev
6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2.

Lopez beat fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4.

Zeng, of China, rallied to overcome Dudi Sela of Israel 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Beck, of Germany, advanced after his opponent, Jose Acasuso, quit in the second set with a left knee injury.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Serbian Novak Djokovic are the 1-2 seeds in the tournament.

Melzer, Ferrero advance at Croatia Open

Umag, Croatia, July 28 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer and fifth-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero paced first-round winners Tuesday at the Croatia Open.

Melzer defeated Argentine Brian Dabul 6-3, 7-5, and Ferrero beat Belgian Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-3.

In an upset, Italian Fabio Fognini battled back to beat eighth-seeded German Mischa Zverev 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Seventh-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi avoided an upset
by fending off Argentine qualifier Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco beat Russian Igor Andreev in last year's Umag finale, but neither man is playing here this year. This week's top seeds are last week's Hamburg champion Nikolay Davydenko of Russia and Spain's David Ferrer.

Youzhny, Beck advance in Switzerland

Gstaad, Switzerland -- Russian Mikhail Youzhny and German Andreas Beck were first-round winners Sunday in the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Youzhny eliminated Gaston Gaudio of Argentina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 and Beck scored a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win over Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland.

No other matches were scheduled in the first round.

Wozniacki opens Swedish Open with win

Bastad, Sweden -- Caroline Wozniacki and Dominika Cibulkova were among first-round winners Tuesday at the inaugural Swedish Open.

Wozniacki, the tournament's top seed, took out Sofia Arvidsson 6-1, 6-3 in just 63 minutes. Wozniacki won 61 percent of the points in the match, including more than half the points off Arvidsson's serve.

Cibulkova, seeded second, faltered in the second set but still advanced 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 over Sandra Roma. Cibulkova allowed Roma just 12 points in the third set to take the match.

Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 7-5 but No. 4-seeded Kaia Kanepi fell 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

Inaugural Swedish Open under way

Bastad, Sweden -- Seeded players Sorana Cirstea of Romania and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia were among the first-round winners Monday in the first Swedish Open.

Cirstea, the fifth seed, fought off Swedish wild card Johanna Larsson 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 on the clay courts of Bastad Tennis Stadium. Pavlyuchenkova, the sixth seed, also had to rally to eliminate American Jill Craybas 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In other action, seventh-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Slovakian Lenka Wienerova 6-0, 7-5; No. 8 Czech Iveta Benesova downed Poland's Urszula Radwanska 3-6, 6-2, 6-2; Russian Alla Kudryavtseva breezed by Italian Karin Knapp 6-1, 6-1; and Argentine Gisela Dulko ousted Poland's Marta Domachowska 6-4, 6-0.
