Ferrero among Brazil second-round winners

Costa Do Sauipe -- No. 1-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero was pushed to a third set Wednesday but was able to advance to the quarterfinals of the $500,000 Brasil Open.

Three of the four second-round matches on Wednesday's schedule in Brazil went three sets and the players combined for about 10 1/2 hours of tennis.

Ferrero, from Spain, defeated Nicolas Massu 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in nearly 2 1/2 hours. He didn't face a break point in the first or third sets but had his serve broken three times in dropping the second.

He earned a quarterfinal slot against Carlos Berlocq, a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 winner Wednesday over Juan Ignacio Chela in a battle between Argentines. The match took more than two hours -- lengthy for a straight-set decision.

The news bought fresh optimism in the share market raising the price of Cadbury shares by 1.2 percent. Shore Capital’s Darren Shirley says, “There’ll be plenty of ups and downs for Cadbury’s shares over the coming months.”
