Berdych makes Paris Masters third round

Paris -- Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych and No. 6-seeded Fernando Verdasco were second-round winners Tuesday at the BNP Paribas Masters tennis tournament in Paris.

Berdych, finishing up Tuesday's 10-match schedule, topped Florent Serra 6-3, 6-1 in 47 minutes. Berdych converted four of five break-point chances and lost only one point over eight service games.

Verdasco was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 winner over Arnaud Clement. He took 70 percent of the points in the third set in earning a third-round shot at 12th-seeded Gael Monfils.

Monfils staged a big comeback in beating Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Becker jumped out to a 5-1 lead and was serving for the first set before Monfils won five consecutive games to get back in the match.

Verdasco sharp in Swedish Open 2nd round

Bastad, Sweden -- Fernando Verdasco dropped just two games Thursday in collecting a second-round victory at the Swedish Open tennis tournament.

Verdasco, the tournament's No. 2 seed, rolled by Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-1 and won 62 percent of the points in the match. He won more points receiving serves (32-27) than Robert managed to win on serve and didn't face a break point.

No. 4-seeded Nicolas Almagro defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-4 and also advanced to the quarterfinals. Almagro was able to notch service breaks in each set while Nieminen wasn't able to force a break-point situation.

Verdasco, Gasquet are finalist's at Nice

Nice -- Second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain out-fought Argentine Leonard Mayer in straight sets Friday and reached the finals of the Nice Open in France.

Verdasco took a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 semifinal decision in a match that lasted an hour and 40 minutes at the NIce Lawn Tennis Club.

The 26-year-old left-handed Spaniard, ranked No. 9 in the world, will go against France's Richard Gasquet in Saturday's championship match .

Gasquet, 23, unseeded in the Nice event, battled to a 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (8-6) semifinal decision over Italian Potito Starace. The French fan favorite had eight aces in a match that lasted just over 2 hours.

The event is considered a tuneup for the French Open, which begins Sunday in Paris.

Verdasco reaches Nice semifinals

Nice, France -- Second-seeded Fernando Verdasco continued his hot run on the clay-court circuit Wednesday with a quarterfinal victory at the Nice Open.

Verdasco eliminated Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 in a match that took 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Verdasco has won a title in Barcelona this year and was a runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Monte Carlos Masters.

In Friday's semifinals, Verdasco will meet Leonardo Mayer. After dropping the first set, Mayer defeated fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. It is Mayer's first victory in a year over a player ranked among the top 30 in the world. Mayer is ranked 59th.

Potito Starace reached the semifinals by defeating Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Verdasco downs Soderling in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain -- Spaniard Fernando Verdasco claimed his fifth career title Sunday, ousting Robin Soderling of Sweden in three sets to win the Barcelona Open.

Verdasco took 2 hours to outlast Soderling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and picked up his second championship of the year. He won the San Jose event in February.

Soderling, the No. 2 seed, fell victim to Verdasco's 76 percent first-serve winning pace after battling back to produce a tie match in the middle frame.

The Spaniard broke a losing streak to Soderling, notching his first win against the Swede since 2005 and improving his all-time against him to 2-4.

Verdasco claimed a $385,000 prize.

Verdasco back in tennis Top 10

London -- Fernando Verdasco's strong showing at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters returned him to the Top 10 while Rafael Nadal moved closer to the world's No. 2 ranking.

Nadal was dominant at Monaco, winning the event for a sixth consecutive year. He had three matches, one of which was Sunday's title match against Verdasco, in which he only lost one game.

As a result Nadal, No. 3 in the world, narrowed the difference between himself and No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who lost to Verdasco in Saturday's semifinals.
Verdasco went from No. 12 to ninth with his runner-up finish. That move also resulted in Marin Cilic dropping from ninth to 11th with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga holding into the No. 10 spot.

Verdasco to play Nadal in Masters final

Monte Carlo -- Fernando Verdasco upset top-seeded Novak Djokovic Saturday and earned a berth in the finals of the $3 million Monte Carlo Rolex Masters against Rafael Nadal.

Nadal is a five-time defending champion at Monte Carlo and his 6-2, 6-3 semifinal win Saturday over 11th-seeded David Ferrer is his 31st consecutive victory at the clay-court event. He beat Djokovic in last year's Monte Carlo final.

Verdasco, the No. 6 seed, erased the chances of a 2009 finals rematch with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Djokovic. Verdasco hadn't beaten Djokovic since 2006 but was the clear winner Saturday, taking 60 percent of the points in the match and more than half (37-29) when Djokovic served.

Top seed Verdasco bounced from Mexico Open

Acapulco, Mexico -- Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain fell Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Verdasco went down in straight sets to No. 7 Argentine Juan Monaco, who won by 7-5, 6-3 in the first big surprise of the clay-court tournament. Monaco, the world No. 30, has already had a finals appearance in Santiago, Chile, this year.

It was the first time in six Mexican Open appearances that Monaco has been able to advance to the semifinals. For Verdasco, it was the second defeat in Acapulco, where he was downed in the 2004 final to countryman Carlos Moya.

No. 3 seed Spaniard David Ferrer advanced in his quarterfinal match, beating Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-4.

41st-seed Chardy ousts Verdasco at Memphis

Memphis -- Second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain was knocked out of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis Tuesday by 41st-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Chardy scored seven aces and did not give Verdasco a break-point opportunity in the match and went on to win 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany also made an early exit with a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev.

Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic had little trouble dispatching American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted only 57 minutes. Berdych won 85 percent of his service points.

Also advancing was Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, who served up 32 aces while downing Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

Verdasco downs Roddick in SAP final

San Jose, Calif. -- Spaniard Fernando Verdasco rebounded from a losing set to bump off top-seeded American Andy Roddick Sunday and claim the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.

Verdasco, the second seed, downed Roddick 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, breaking a personal seven-game losing streak to Roddick and becoming the first Spaniard to win the tournament since Manuel Santana earned the title in Berkeley, Calif., in 1964.

Verdasco collected 15 aces and didn't let seven double faults stand in his way after dropping the first set to a seemingly confident Roddick.

The Spaniard scored an early break for a 2-1 edge before winning the second set.

The third set was even until Verdasco gained the crucial service break in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead.

Murray, Youzhny reach Valencia final

Valencia, Spain -- Top-seeded Scotsman Andy Murray and Russian Mikhail Youzhny will battle Sunday for the $3 million Valencia Open championship.

Murray reached the final by knocking off fourth-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. Murray is 7-1 lifetime against the Spaniard.

Youzhny rallied past countryman and No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a nearly 2 1/2-hour marathon.

Davydenko was the third seeded player Youzhny upset this week. He also beat No. 3 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 5 Gilles Simon.

This is Youzhny's fourth final this year. He is 5-6 lifetime in title matches.

Murray will be going after his sixth title this year and 14th of his career.

Tsonga loses at Valencia Open

Valencia, Spain -- Third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France was among Wednesday's losers at the Valencia Open men's tennis tournament at Valencia, Spain.

Tsonga was trailing 0-3 to Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the third set when a left wrist injury forced him to retire.

Tsonga won the first set, 7-6 (7-3), while Youzhny won the second, 6-0.

The loss dropped Tsonga 380 points behind No. 8-ranked Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the battle for a berth at next week's season-ending Paribas Masters at Paris.
