It wasn't that long ago that the credit market was exceptionally tight. In spite of (or perhaps because of) Uncle Sam's help, almost no company that actually needed a loan was able to get one from a private lender at decent rates.

U.S. bank failures top 100

Washington -- Regulators closed seven more banks in the United States recently, marking the second straight year more than 100 financial institutions failed, officials said.

Banks failures in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kansas, Nevada, Minnesota and Oregon pushed the number of collapsed banks to 103 so far this year, despite many financial institutions this week reporting second-quarter earnings that topped last year's levels, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said the collapses would cost its insurance fund $431 million.

State regulators seized:

-- Crescent Bank & Trust Co., based in Jasper, Ga., which had 11 branches, $1.01 billion in assets and $965.7 million in deposits.

Seven European banks fail stress tests

Brussels -- Only seven of 91 European banks failed stress tests on their financial stability in the event of a sharp economic downturn, regulators said Friday.

Five banks in Spain, one in Germany and one in Greece came up short when European Union regulators found they needed modest amounts of new capital, The Wall Street Journal reported. The stress tests were similar to those conducted to restore confidence in U.S. banks last year.

The EU's Committee of European Banking Supervisors examined balance sheets to determine what banks in the 16 nations that use the euro as currency -- as well as Britain, Denmark, Hungary, Poland and Sweden -- were strong enough to survive a financial crisis, the EUobserver said.

4 more banks collapse; 2010 failure tally 26

There seems to be no end to bank failures in the nation. Reeling under the effects of recession, four more banks have been shut down by federal regulators Friday, bringing the tally to 26 for this year.

5 more banks fail, shutdown tally 120

New York, November 7 -- In yet another case of bank failure, United Commercial Bank was closed Friday, bringing the total to 120 this year.
