Simon takes Eastbourne first-round victory

EastBourne, England -- Third-seeded Gilles Simon was among the first-round winners Monday at the grass-court Aegon International tournament in England.

Simon was one of four seeded players who advanced to the second round with wins Monday. He moved on with a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 victory over Evgeny Korolev. Simon won just five more points (106-101) in the match but grouped enough to amass five breaks of serve.

Fourth-seeded Julien Benneteau got by James Blake 7-6 (7-3), 7-5; No. 6-seeded Horacio Zeballos hung on for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Lukas Lacko; and eighth-seeded Michael Llodra blitzed Martin Emmrich 6-0, 6-3 in the matches involving seeded players.

Federer, Murray, Djokovic win openers

Paris -- Fourth-seeded Andy Murray rallied from a two-set deficit in claiming a first-round victory Monday at the French Open.

Murray played for more than 4 hours in his 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 win over French-crowd favorite Richard Gasquet. Murray dropped serve twice in the third set but it appeared Gasquet tired in the lengthy match and Murray capitalized.

Defending champion Roger Federer opened his 2010 French Open run with a straight-set victory. Federer defeated Peter Luczak 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in a first-round match. Federer committed just 11 unforced errors and faced only one break-point situation.

No. 3-seeded Novak Djokovic was a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 winner over Evgeny Korolev.

Chardy survives first round in Russia

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Jeremy Chardy, who at No. 4 was the highest seed in action Tuesday, stormed past Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2, 6-2 at the St. Petersburg Open.

Chardy has reached the semifinals on the ATP circuit four times this year and won the Mercedes Cup, but he had lost in the opening round of his previous four tournaments.

No. 5 seed Igor Andreev also advanced Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Potito Starace.

Qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky pulled off the biggest surprise of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over sixth-seeded Evgeny Korolev.

Two-time defending champion Andy Murray chose not to compete here this week. No. 1 seed Mikhail Youzhny, coming off a tournament victory in Moscow last weekend, will meet Andrey Golubev Wednesday.
